Something I've noticed on ios 5 that hasn't been mentioned before. Asynchronous downloading of app updates.
If you have multiple updates the phone will download the first one and as soon as it starts installing will then start downloading the second, then the third and so on.
I had about 5 apps all installing at the same time.
Much better that way than before.

Yep, looks to me like it will have up to 4 apps at the various stages of installing at once, with the rest queued.

No problem here, thou admittedly I didn't upgrade until this morning. I plugged in my iPhone last night, it told me there was an update, I accepted the update, then it told me it would take 9 hours. So I unplugged my phone and let it download over night, upgraded this morning :D

I was also using the iOS 5 GM, and I've not noticed any differences yet...

I generally do the update in two stages - when the popup er... pops up saying you have an update, there are two options - 'download' and 'download and install'. If you select the former, it'll download the new version (which, pre-iOS 5, are about 700MB) even if you unplug the phone and do nothing else. then at some point later you can sync your phone again and it'll apply the update. So that way you don't have to leave your phone connected for hours.

Of course this is all academic once you've got 5.0 anyway, because they've finally managed to get it to do delta updates over the air, so you don't need the syncing thing at all.

In this case, it's down to demand and I think you'd be far fetched to propose that any Linux distributor could cope with this level of demand smoothly. Google and Amazon might have the server farms to deal with it but I doubt anyone else would.

And this is why Linux distros are available via Bittorrent, usually on multiple trackers. It's a very scalable solution and it's unlikely to ever be overwhelmed because Linux users all like to share.

I might wait a bit before upgrading.

You'll be fine now.

TBH it wasn't the actual download of the update that was the problem. The problem was verifying the install.

With 100 million (or however many) other users trying to verify at the same time it just couldn't cope.

Still doesn't help that the Aberystwyth exchange is terribly overpopulated...You do see something of a difference in internet speeds when a major Linux distro is released...

lol - not much the Ubuntu team can do about that. Nice to know you have loads of Linux geeks there though :D

Mine is downloading now, will take about 20 minutes.

As the iPhone isn't being actively used, doesn't have a SIM card and can't talk to my wireless network, I really don't have much to lose!
