I have an aerial extension cable and a bigger than usual aerial that it turns out wasn't needed, this should boost the output of the router and make the wavy things come out of a better location (stop me if I'm getting too technical) I'm prepared to sell these to you for their second hand price if you want?)

I get dodgy reception in the cellar, even though it is only about 10M as the crow flies from the router.
I'm either going to run a cable down here or I try the mains networking units, one plugged in by the router and Cat5e into the router and another in my office with Cat5e into the gigabit switch - I'll probably then move the NAS down here as well, as I fill it with content and it takes a couple of hours to transmit an afternoon's worth of photos up to it.

Well, after a bit of messing around with the cables and stuff, I've moved the router about 2m closer to my room and (more importantly I think) away from the table lamp and other electrical cables etc...
I now get a full Wifi signal from on my desk in my room!
Yay!

Is it true wireless burglar alarm sensors can lower the effectiveness of your wifi network?
I heard that somewhere, but I've no idea if it's true. We got a wired alarm installed recently, but only because I couldn't be arsed changing batteries out in the sensors every few months.

It's possible they use the same part of the radio spectrum (2.4GHz). Lots of domestic radio tech (wireless doorbells, proprietary wireless mice etc) use that same band and they can interfere with each other. If you've got a wireless-N router and clients that support it, you can switch them to using the 5Ghz band instead. This is technically illegal in the UK but I don't think anyone has ever been prosecuted... Jon
