This is why decorations come down early here. The last thing I want to do on my birthday is pull down the decorations. It makes me sad.

Incorrect. As we see below: Note that says 'formerly' (i.e. in the past), not 'formally' (i.e. as a matter of ceremony). In that case, according to the OED, the practice of taking down the decorations on Twelfth Night is no longer to be observed. Moreover, few of us have actually followed the English traditions of Christmas since the popular Gemuetlichkeit-type movements of the mid-1800s. What we call a 'traditional' Victorian Christmas bears much more resemblance to the traditional celebrations of Central Europe, particularly those of Germany. As such, the decorations go up on the first Sunday in Advent (between 27th November and 3rd of December) and come down sometime between Epiphany on the 6th of January and ' Lichtmess' (Candlemas or The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple) on the 2nd of February.

My tree came down the other day. No reason other than I had nowhere to put Emily's toys, the tree took up a lot of space and she was about to get another boat load of toys for her birthday. Otherwise I'd normally leave it for the 1st week of Jan or something.

Fair enough - I'd be tempted to do the same.
Watching your child play and smile has to outrank a tree, surely?

We had a tree three years ago, but when we moved house a little while ago it was still in the back garden where we left it, brown but still with most of its needles.
This year our tree was micro sized and in a pot. If it lives we keep it. If not, it's not a pain in the arse to get rid of.

I also refer the honourable gentleman to the statement I made earlier:
