Sorry to hear this. It's terrible and infuriating.

Despite this, it is great to see you back here.

+1

The scum have no concept of the misery they inflict, and I'm willing to bet they would squeal louder than most if it happened to them.

Having been burgled once I can empathise, but there's not really anything else I can say that hasn't already been said.

You have learned something from the experience.
Nobody was hurt so just take what you have learned and use the knowledge wisely.
As crap as this was to happen to you (anyone), possessions can be replaced, data/memories which are stored digitally are not so easy to get back.
It's still good to know that if my place burned to the ground I'd have all my important data on a drive in my desk drawer in work.

Something I've been considering for a while is the use of a wireless NAS box of some sort. Stick it in a not obvious place like on top of a wardrobe in the spare bedroom (or even in the attic if I can figure out how to get power up there) and send a regular image backup to it as as security copy. Not true 'off site' but certainly 'out of sight'.

I've been thinking about that. If you ever work it out, please let us know.

I've considered putting my Microserver NAS in the loft. I already ran electric up there for a TV distribution amplifier and light by simply putting an extension lead up from the airing cupboard. I could do it right now by just plugging it in, but actually I've ended up using it as a desktop...

My motivation was primarily to keep it out of the way where it wouldn't be seen or heard or accidentally damaged, but safer from theft is another consideration.

I'm sorry to hear about your woes, CC. It's the violation of your personal space that hurts the most, I think. Stuff can be replaced, but you never quite feel clean after you someone you don't know has been rummaging through you private world.

worked great until I started using Apeture, then it stuck at always having 90GB to backup every time I added new photos to the collection

You did know Aperture can also handle managed files like Lightroom, yes?

No, it installed and created a huge database, I didn't realise there was an option. I'll have a look at it.

Edit: I had a look, but couldn't see any options... Can you give me a hint, where to look.

Sorry to hear your news CC.
Looking at my desktop I see I'm doing exactly the same thing as you were. Time to start hiding things me thinks.
