Right, whilst I'm saving up for my own lair, I'm trying to improve my current room. Essentially, I have too much crap to be able to get rid of it all and I need help with storage/layout ideas.

I tried to use an online site to create an accurate room but it's not quite right. However, it's a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

• The 45* door is the main entrance and is part-blocked by the old boiler cupboard. This is now a storage area and contains a lot of files (eg med school notes) but also a few other bits and bobs.
• The area between the boiler cupboard and the desk is currently occupied by a laundry basket. I really can't fit anything too large here as it'll block the drawers which are full length.
• On the desk sits the main PC, TV, PS3 and printer. There's actually very little space for me to work. Next to the desk is a bookcase.
• The desk wall is plasterboard so I can't drill in any shelves to store books etc.
• I really would like a larger wardrobe but I can't fit anything bigger because it blocks access to the second door which leads to the bathroom.

What I'm looking for are storage ideas. I'm in the process of ripping all of my DVDs to NAS so I can put them away in storage. The bed has two drawers to store bedding, towels etc.

Any ideas?

What's the construction of the bed?
Could you fit draws under it?
How tall are the shelves next to the desk? Try getting taller ones if they are only desk height.
What's that at the foot of the bed? Maybe get rid of it and fix a full height shelving unit there, possibly with a drawer or two at the bottom if you need?

I'm living in rented accommodation and so I can't go drilling holes in walls either and I've found that in the bedroom a full height shelving unit (6 shelves) makes for great clothes storage.

As stated, bed has 2 drawers but they're not full-depth - maybe only a third of the depth of the bed. They're built into the base.

The bedside cabinet has four drawers. It also has bedside stuff on it like clock, water, space for keys etc. Anything too wide blocks my entrance into the room.

The foot of the bed has the wardrobe. It stands at around 5ft tall. On top of the wardrobe are boxes containing stuff like dvds, old computer equipment etc. If I can get rid of the equipment and store away the DVDs, it would mean I could add a cupboard or similar on top of the wardrobe.

The side of the bookcase has some space. If I could add some (removable) shelves to the side of it, it would add more storage space.

In all honesty, what I really need is an "office" where I can store the computer and the bookcase and mean I could add a proper set of dressers in their palce.

Getting a single bed will also give you more storage space. You could get one of those beds that has the desk space under it so that would free up the space of your current desk.

Bed is fairly new and not keen on chucking it out or selling it.

Alcove is small enough for a person to hide behind when the door is open. Normally hang my coats on the hooks behind the door.

Do you have a picture rail? If so use that to hang stuff from. I use collapsible storage boxes from Really Useful Storage so you can see the contents through the side and fold them up when not in use. Very handy when you have to move as well.

No picture rail but I have a 5ft wardrobe and 4ft bookcase and each has one side free to hang things from. Any recommendations?

I'm also after a drawer tidy/organiser so I can sort my cables (>30) but my drawers are around 25cm deep.

I use use storage like these.. They come in loads of different sizes and being clear you can see what is in them as well, without having to open them.
