Interestingly it was the changes that the Brits made that made it the aircraft that changed the war.

Let's get this straight. The P51 was designed to match a British Air Ministry specification. In fact, it's first operational service was with the RAF. It wasn't until Packard started licence-building the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that the Mustang changed from being an okay aircraft to being the superb one of legend, allowing it to attain a higher performance at greater altitude. Whether the P51 changed the war is debatable. That claim could be made for many other aircraft, such as the Lancaster for example, or even the humble Hurricane - which was pressed into many offensive and defensive roles it was never originally designed for. Perhaps this is a debate we could have in another thread.

I think that it was responsible for more aircraft being shot down in Western Europe than any other.

Range was a major feature. It could escort bombers all the way into central Germany.
