The Space Shuttle didn’t go very far. They never, for example, go it to the Moon. All it ever did was orbit the plant. *shrug* still fits the definition. The guys who flew in the shuttles and go up to the ISS are still astronauts, even though they didn't go as far as Armstrong or Aldren. There's a line (which is named after someone who I can't remember) above which you officially count as having been out of the Earth's atmosphere. It doesn't matter if you're a yard over that line or 30,000 miles over it, you're still recorded as having been 'in space'.

I would ask where vogager 1 would fit on there, but it's way too small.

I think it fails on the science fiction definition? ;)

Even so, you'd expect the ship from Star Trek : The Motion Picture to be in there and that was massive..

I had wondered about the smaller vessels and how the creator of the graphic defined 'starship.'

IIRC, isn't it generally that a starship can travel between the stars (which usually means having some form of FTL propulsion) while a spaceship simply can travel in space (i.e. can survive the environment). The Space Shuttle was a spaceship but it wasn't a starship.

From a nautical point of view I would say that the Space Shuttle was a spacecraft as it travelled in space, but that it was not a starship / spaceship as it did not carry a smaller spacecraft. From a sci fi point of view that would make Star Wars X-wings and Star Trek runabouts spacecraft, whilst a Star Destroyer and the Enterprise would be starships / spaceships.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Yes but the X wings were able to transport Luke to the Dagobah system from Hoth,

Yep, pretty much everything bigger than a scooter had FTL in Star Wars.

People have rowed across the Atlantic in boats, they've sailed across it by windsurf. Those vehicles are boats / watercraft, not ships. Distance is not a relevant factor here.

I can accept that. My point was that the distance measured was mentioned earlier. Though it would barely be a pixel on this scale.

Did we ever see a TIE fighter launch from a planet?
They all launched from mobile space stations and giant starships, so I guess there was no real need for them to have FTL capability.

Couldn't find Guild Highliners and No Ships on there, both are up to several kilometres long. The Highliner that took the Arteides from Caladan to Arrakis could fit their whole military force and retainers in 'one small corner' of its hold. Likewise, the lager no ships could fit a full grown worm in one corner of one of its holds.

I am rather disappointed that it's a bitmap, and not a vector image. A vector image would let you zoom into the little craft, and you'd be able to include vessels with external dimensions different to their internal ones - such as the TARDIS.

Also it's missing the space draft launched from the Sprodj Atomic Research Centre.
