FWIW, William Shatner has been goading Star Wars fans by describing it as fantasy, and claiming that Star Trek is proper sci-fi.

Revisiting my earlier definition of sc-fi from the Ox-Dic: "fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets."

Star Trek does indeed tick all of the boxes, where as Star Wars does not. I still mean the "future" part

I'd say you are interpreting the dictionary definition to literally.

Star Wars may be set in the past, but that is irelevant. The story would be the same if it was set in the future. The important fact is that the technology is more advanced than we possess today.

Anything that has sound effects in space (ie explosions, later blasts etc) is not doing it properly.

So that would be nearly all of them would fail. Only 2001 from memory has not sounds in space.

The keyword there is "fiction" rather than science.

I accept that. Even so most are unrealistic in that they have sound effects.

IIRC Firefly didn't have sound in space (or if it did, it wasn't going to originally).

I have seen it but the sound or lack there of did not register with me.

I look forward to a considered response from the egg man, and no that's not sarcasm!
I'm starting to properly draft the blog post tonight.
This thread has been helpful in informing it.
I'm happy that discussion has evolved organically through the thread and not specifically required from the OP.
There' some good stuff in here. Thanks to all contributions so far.
