Okay will have a look into this. Some of the rooms/hallways have just a single light bulb. Others have 3 lower wattage bulbs in a cluster. We bought a whole box of the CFL type bulbs and I hate the time it takes to warm up. I have a fluorescent strip in my bedroom and I often put that on at the same time so I can actually see what I'm doing.

Gah! Okay so I couldn't find the box for the current CFL which meant I was unsure of the equivalent wattage. Whilst shopping at Tescos, I had a look at bulbs. They had some bright Philips ones but they were screw type rather than bayonet. Tesco's did their own-brand which is an 8W bulb with the equivalent of 40W. Fitted it.
The light came on instantly but had a couple of issues: not bright enough, and the light cluster doesn't light up the entire room. There's a hemispherical dome out of which the light emits. But my old CFL was essentially a bare bulbs and lit up more of the room. I've since found a spare CFL and it turns out it was 18W with 100W equivalent.
Positives were colour and instant light.
So now I need to hunt down a reliable 100W equivalent LED.

Will try the LT Lighting one. As for the halogen, it might be useful for swirl spotting when machine polishing the car.

Bought the LT one from Amazon (which moron decides to pack a lightbulb in a box of protein shakes?). The 100W is obviously brighter but also much larger. Certainly surprised to find that the 60W LED bulb was as hot as an incandescent one.

Other than the LED GU10 spot lights in the kitchen, we have one LED 'normal' light (think normal light bulb shape) in the hall. It's way better than normal energy saving bulbs as it doesn't take time to get to full brightness (and I'll bet it doesn't break as easily/quickly). I'll never buy a normal energy saving bulb again. LED bulbs are the future. Pity they're do damn expensive.

But they're getting cheaper all the time, and with the saving from running a halogen the initial outlay should be saved.

Yes but you get the money back from the lower electricity bills. I do not have any conventional bulbs at all and only one daylight low energy bulb. To light my home I have some 24 LED bulbs and lamps, with an average power consumption of 4 watts or less.
