From what I can tell, they have a serious point. The politicos have decided that fuel flow rates should be restricted without actually checking if there's a reliable way to monitor if they are. Turns out there isn't.

I would say it's hard to tell from where we sit. Modern vehicles all use fuel flow metering don't they?
Red Bulls error was in disobeying a direct order to adjust flow rate despite warnings that disqualification would be used as a punishment. Apparently other teams received the warnings and complied.

Ah, just re-reading the post that I got that information from and Frank was a little less emphatic:

There is nothing to be gained from arguing this here. I can respect Frank's point of view and really I don't have one, as all I was doing was relaying the James Allen report. Joe Saward is more bullish in his blog, as is his right.
Personally I found the race a little processional with the exception of Bottas. Button used pit strategy to jump from 10th, otherwise it was underwhelming. I can't forgive myself for enjoying Vettels bad fortune.

Given engine noise is thrown away energy, I don't have a problem with F1 cars not being deafening loud any more. Better engineering, frankly. Isn't that part of what the sport is about?

Absolutely.

The cars are fractionally slower than last year but, pound for pound, they outperform the V8s.

The video does show there's a difference but the assumption seems to be that 'less volume = worse experience'. Given half of the crowd in the video seem to be wearing ear defenders in last year's footage and therefore couldn't hear the noise anyway, I'm not entirely sure that assumption is valid.
