actually I'd go along with that, no one would say Bridgesis.

"With personal names that end in -s but are not spoken with an extra s: just add an apostrophe after the -s:

The court dismissed Bridges' appeal.

Connors' finest performance was in 1991."

Agreed

However I find it depends on whether you would pronounce the genitive 's or not. My Northern brain wants to do the following:

Michelle Francis’ tin of goodies
Paul Binks’s tin of goodies
Ines Rios’s tin of goodies
Arron Wells’ tin of goodies
Liz Morris’s tin of goodies
Sally Voss’s tin of goodies
Sally Travis’s tin of goodies
Lorraine Hawes’ tin of goodies
Rebecca Rolls’ tin of goodies
Rebecca Jones’s tin of goodies

It's interesting the lack of understanding of grammar rules in this country. Is it not taught at school?
And for people who say you don't need to comply with grammar rules, remember that language is a communication tool, rules are there so people can understand each other.

It wasn't taught properly for about three decades up until the mid-noughties.

I learned grammar rules in French. In a Grammar school.

Both the park of St James, one however is St James' and the other is St James's

Language is an instinct of the human species just as web spinning is an instinct of spiders.

Therefore as long as you abide by the innate rules of language, in that verbs must appear in the correct place in the sentence etc, then you are perfectly understood.

Yoda is a classic example of someone who "breaks" the rules of English, however, abides by the rules of innate human language, he does.

Not sure what you mean by this. I learnt grammar at school in the 70s. From what I'm seeing it's not being taught in schools now. What happened in nid-noughties?

I had English grammar rules drilled into me 3 times a week for 10 years and frequently score minus 100 % at French grammar test in primary. I think I'm ok now lol

I always thought that "s apostrophe" was for plurals.

For names ending in s it's always "apostrophe s".

For instance.

St James's hospital.
or
The dogs' kennel.

I.e. The kennel belonging to many dogs.

From the mir 70s on, grammar was taught in schools, but it wasn't as strictly marked, especially outside of English Language lessons. It was considered more important that pupils could get their ideas across, than that the text was grammatically correct. So people learnt grammar, but they weren't forced to use it in all subjects, so it didn't stick as well as it should have.

In Germany, you lose around 10% of your marks, if there are more than 2 or 3 grammatical errors on a page, regardless which subject it is.
