In an era of potent concern over internet pornography, cyber-bullying, and drugs, it is hard to imagine a board game being controversial. But, 30 years ago Dungeons & Dragons was the subject of a full-on moral panic, writes Peter Ray Allison.

At the beginning of 1982's ET, a group of teenage boys are indulging in a roleplay game, featuring dice and spells, and sounding a lot like Dungeons & Dragons. They banter as they wait for a pizza delivery to arrive.

Quote:
[Patricia] Pulling [mother who blamed the suicide of her son on D&D] described D&D as "a fantasy role-playing game which uses demonology, witchcraft, voodoo, murder, rape, blasphemy, suicide, assassination, insanity, sex perversion, homosexuality, prostitution, satanic type rituals, gambling, barbarism, cannibalism, sadism, desecration, demon summoning, necromantics, divination and other teachings".

So nothing changes - it’s video games now, but int eh 1980s, rolling dice, moving little figures around, and telling stories in a group was the problem.

I read the article this morning but never got round to posting it. Found it entirely interesting that it was blamed for a multitude of things and yet it never materialised. Completely agree now that video games are being made into a scapegoat. Wonder what will come after video games.

I distinctly remember it all going out of fashion with films after Natural Born Killers came out - nobody would have given a sh1t about that film otherwise.

Idiots like her damn near killed the comics and video game industries in their time, while today the press still do their PR for them. It's 2014!

Society will continue to look for a scapegoat, but there's a few generations who know better now at least.
