Flying to Hamburg next week to see a friend's wedding. Staying in the same hotel as the couple which is where the wedding reception is. Haven't been to Germany since I was at school and I don't remember anything because it was so long ago.
Any thoughts, hints, tips, suggestions etc would be welcome.

Don't mention the war. I slightly did, but I think I got away with it.

Hamburg is lovely, once you get outside the main drag - that is pretty much the same as any other shopping mile, the same (or similar) shops selling the same products. The Speicherstadt is nice, it is like the old docks in London. There is a coffee museum there and the world's largest train set. Try here for some information on what to see and do. http://english.hamburg.de/ If you are not with your other half, then the Reeperbahn is the typical destination for a boozy evening, strip and travesty bars.

I know from watching Eddie Izzard that the French for transvestite is travesty, wonder if the German is the same?

It is the name given for bars where drag queens perform on stage. Probably the most famous is Olivia Jones, a huge 'lass', who has done well on TV talk shows and runs her own club. German for transvestite is Transvestit.

Right back from Hamburg on Sunday night. Seemed nice. People seemed to love their booze - drinking beer as early as 11am on a friday in a marketplace. Saw the harbour, the park, went out on a boat ride. Went to a couple of nightclubs, chatted to some birds, got propositioned by some prostitutes. There was a gay parade there too on the day of the wedding which caused a few problems with getting things done.

The gay parade is called Gay Pride lol! I believe it was also in Brighton & Amsterdam and maybe other places too.
