Recent(ish) films of his I've seen.

Dark shadows - average
Charlie and the chocolate factory - terrible
Pirates of the Caribbean - good (got a bit matrix-y toward the end, but that's not Depp's fault)
Once upon a time in Mexico - good

Nothing else he's been in looked as though it was worth seeing.

EXIT

I'm excluding On Stranger Tides from the classification of 'good' for the Pirates films. That film was pants.

I enjoyed The Lone Ranger & The Tourist

The Lone Ranger just didn't appeal to me, and I've never heard of The Tourist.

Her action films aren't bad - Mr and Mrs Smith, Wanted, and Tomb Raider gets unfairly slated IMO. It's certainly not a typical video game car cash.

Wanted was okay, but I wouldn't go as far as saying good.

I liked it cos it was a bit different and it knew what to keep from the comic and what to ditch.

I though Salt was pretty good for an action film. Also enjoyed Wanted.

Oh come on! Girl, Interrupted was brilliant, also Gia, The Good Sheppard and the action films mentioned.

I saw Maleficent yesterday and enjoyed that too.

In September 2012 it was announced that Showtime is developing the sequel as a television series, with Eric Roth as executive producer/writer & Robert De Niro directing the pilot.

No idea if that's still happening, though it would make a lot of sense with the zeitgeist for period drama. De Niro wanted to make two sequels showing the Cold War and what have you, but the film essentially flopped. At the time of release I was reading an extensive book on the CIA and so actively avoided the film (still haven't seen it).

When judged on an item-by-item basis it was essentially good; acting, directing, dialogue. It's just as a feature length film, it committed the sin of forgetting to be interesting, much like the latest Tinker Tailor (which was notwithstanding, a lot better)
