... And managers are basically people whose job it is to interrupt people. That's pretty much what managers are for. They're for interrupting people. They don't really do the work, so they make sure everyone else is doing work, which is an interruption. We have lots of managers in the world now, and a lot of people in the world, and a lot of interruptions by these managers. They have to check in: "Hey, how's it going? Show me what's up." This sort of thing. They keep interrupting you at the wrong time, while you're actually trying to do something they're paying you to do.

I'm joining the female-bosses-are-[LIFTED] bandwagon. Without exception.

But most guys weren't perfect. Just easier to live with as you knew where you stood.

Out of interest, I'm reading a lot that people want to be left alone to do their job without interference. Is that fair? What do you want out of a boss?

I'm gonna be one shortly for the first time & I've got a lot of personal experience to draw on, but I'm interested in your opinions...

Currently it doesn't matter if we're left alone or not; I recently got emails complaining about work I completed two months ago. This is where days of work are ignored in favour of 'If I was psychic do you think I'd actually work for you?' stuff.

I just want a boss who isn't some sort of 'path.

There are definitely exceptions. I know it's early days in my new job, but my boss is female and so far she's been very good indeed. I think part of what helps is that she's the CEO, and the structure of the company is incredibly flat. There's literally her and her husband as the two founders, and then everyone else. There are also only about 25 people in the company so it's relatively small.

I do love Jason Fried and what he and DHH have achieved at Basecamp / 37 Signals. He's long been outspoken about the advantages of remote teams, and a central part of that is about leaving people to get on with their work.

Hmmmm.....

I once had a married female boss whose husband also worked at the same company. It might have been a certain famous pro-audio company ;)

That was [LIFTED] hideous. She was always rowing with him at work & making all of us uncomfortable. I'd love it if there were exceptions. But I've not met one yet. Maybe I'm just a [LIFTED]...?

I wonder which audio company that could have been. ;)

Thing is, for any individual person, our sample size of bosses is most likely so small as to be insignificant really for drawing conclusions about the workplace as a whole.
