Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan I kind of disagree on that. The two films were very, very different. TMP was moving to the kind of visual/narrative territory occupied by the likes of Alien and 2OO1. While I would not call TMP “hard science fiction” it’s certainly aspiring to be. Khan was far more of a Star Trek feel - I saw an interview where it was described as Horatio Hornblower in space, something Roddenberry saw as an inspiration for the original series.
Aliens Another eyebrow raiser here. You are comparing a haunted house movie with a “boo-yah” marines flick? Blimey.
Both these choices are off - you are really comparing two sets of films that shifted genre so much that it’s hard to select one of the other. In both instances, you can argue that both have their ups and downs, but it’s hard to put them side by side and say that definitely one is better than the other.
