A friend of mine has broken his compact digital camera (a fujifilm finepix something-or-other).

If he want's to go about getting it fixed what's the best place to start? Jessops. Fujifilm?

If it is under warranty, back to the shop where he got it. If it is out of warranty, replace it... I think most of the compacts fall into the "uneconimical to repair" category. If it is out of warranty and has failed, then there is probably a better model out there, that will cost less than the repair costs...

Even if it out of warranty, and has not been abused, he could still get a refund according to this BBC article.

If by abused you mean dropped onto the metal floor of a nightclub by his girlfriend then I don't think it's worth chasing the warranty.
