I'm thinking of seeing Pixar's Up in 3D but have a few questions if anyone can help....

1) Are the glasses the poloraised type or the goold old red and blue lenses?
2) Can you wear them over normal glasses?
3) Does it make the cinema experience (with the added cost also) any better?

The glasses are polarised and can been worn over normal glasses.

The experience is very good, I've seen ice age and final destination in 3D. Ice age was very good while FD 3D story line messed up the film but the effects were ok.

I really like 3D films and the new James Cameron film "Avator" will start making 3D amazing. You’ll probably see the clip if you do end up going to the cinema and watching in 3D.

I know you can get 3D films on DVD now so was considering getting some glasses (if theyre the same as the cinema ones) and taking them to the cinema when I need them. I have heard though that the cinema wont let you do this.

You can keep the glasses after the film or stick them in a recycle box as you get a new pair every time you visit (well in our UCG anyway).

Not sure about the 3D DVD on a standard Plasma/LCD TV though, think you may need a 3D specific Monitor.

I was going to start a thread on this subject but I'm glad someone has mentioned 3D. As far as I can tell, the 3D on DVD is not the same as at the cinema. I recently bought Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (Yes, I knew it was going to be awful) and found that you get a couple of pairs of hopeless old red/blue glasses which make the onscreen colours very weird (just like it always does), but at the cinema you get polarised glasses so the colours are much more true to life.

The same goes for My Bloody Valentine 3D. I had heard the effects were good in the cinema but on DVD it's back to red/blue which is not good enough. Reviews of films on Amazon quite often say that the viewer gave up on their 3D version and watched it in 2D instead. I've never known a DVD to give away polarised glasses, I presume it would add too much to the cost.

If anyone has seen a 3D film on the big screen and then bought the same film on DVD I would like to know if the above is true in all cases.

The polarised glasses won't work on a regular TV. It works by having two images with light polarised at 90 degrees from each other so that each lens blocks out an entire image.

On a TV the light is not polarised like this so you wouldn't see the effect at all.

Unless you spend ridiculous money on a TV that does do this and then I'm not even sure they exist yet.

when i went to see Monsters vs Aliens in 3D, the effects were amazing, if a little overdone to begin with. i stopped noticing them about halfway through though, probably because i had become used to them. my local 3D cinema (Vue in Hull) only sticks an extra quid or so onto the price, so its usually worth it. proper 3D in cinemas use polarized glasses, that are pretty huge and fit over your normal glasses. 3 of us that went were wearing glasses of various sizes and styles, and none of us had any complaints over the fitting

Am I being daft or do you need a 120Hz TV as well as 3D glasses to get it to work?
