If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

He blamed the manager. Either way his point was that he was there to make them lots of money, not to pay it out on fixing damaged that occurred while he was there.
They didn't pay, he stopped working there, they lost loads of money as a result. If their management used their brains rather than following the Tesco rule book, they'd have made more profit as a result.
