Following on from the "other" place: I'm actually quite fond of sub-forums, not that many (like avforums say) but sufficient enough to keep things clean and tidy: COMPUTER HARDWARE>WIN >MAC >LIN COMPUTER SOFTWARE>WIN >MAC >LIN COMPUTER GAMES >PCs >Consoles OTHER NERD PURSUITS>Photography >Hifi, AV, ICE & Personal Audio MEETING PLACECLASSIFIEDS*>Wanted >For Sale *By request / invite or min. post count perhaps______________________________________________________________________________ Oh and, when it's all within your power/timetable: Avatars? Please? & can we have the user profiles to the LHS please - I'm not of Eastern tutelage. Kieren

I would also be happy to assist in any kind of graphical overhaul of the site if it was deemed necessary... I've fairly rudimentary photochop skills, but I reckon my layouts are quite strong...

my two cents - might be neater and easier if hardware/software etc were subforums of the OSes shouldd keep down travel time for those only interested in one platform, so its: WIN > hardware > software MAC > hardware > software *IX > hardware > software or maybe, since *IX runs on PC hardware, it would be even neater to combine the two: PC > Windows > *IX > hardware or something

I agree with the board ideas, though can we please replace Linux with "Linux/UNIX" or just rename it to "Open Source", I know it's not much, but it'd make me happy

I'd be easy with either way... The reason I had it by hardware/software rather than the OS camps is because defining an OS now is all very well and good, but what about in 10 years time? Will Google have an OS? Will Acorn & Amiga come back into the game? Imagine if Windows & OSX swallowed their pride and joined forces... then you've loads of sub-forums - by keeping it under the generic categories you leave room for convergence/expansion. Although there is something niggling me about breaking software up at all between the platforms - because a question in PhotoChop is a question in PhotoChop - regardless of how your icons look in the top right hand corner... and I wouldn't want my request ignored by MAC specialists if they're not surfing the WIN area.... Hmmm, more thought is required.

First design aesthetics request: Can we have a higher contrasting banding between posts - it might be my monitor - but the contrast between light and lighter blue doesn't serperate each person's post all that much... (but then I like how my monitor is setup) Second design aesthetics request:Seasonal themes? I don't know why but the suggestion above has got me thinking how nice it'd be to have a colour scheme that changes 4 times annually.... Mmmm, Coffee & Ochre Forum in Autumn. Third design aesthetics request:Seasonal smiles - naff perhaps - but quite fun come Crimbo.

I suspect it would be sensible to give each OS its own board, and then have a board aimed at applications. Most things are cross platform after all.

aye, i was just throwing a few early ideas around, i dont think we should agree on anything layout-wise for atleast a few days. maybe it would be easier to just have one big software forum? or perhaps allow posting outside the sub-forums for cross-OS software, such as photoshop

It probably sounds silly, but I liked the fact that Mac users had the Mac Users board, it was treated as a second meeting place, and was nice to just find off Mac stuff in it...While a main meeting place is good, threads can get lost quickly...
I don't know about what pople feel about the PCPro board, or what it was used for, but something similar would be nice...

I know what you mean. I also agree that having separate sections for OSs would be good as it would work in a similar way to Dennis. i.e. > Meeting Place > Comments (for any techy updatey stuff) > MAC - General - Software - Hardware > PC - General - Software - Hardware > Gaming - Console - PC Something like that anywho.

Ooh, really liking the new feature that allows you to revise what you have written if someone else has posted since you hit Reply. That's really tasty, although could make the 24hr threads interesting…

I think that's an excellent suggestion, however... See bold words for my thoughts for changes... Ben

Indeed - but best start the discussions and idea sharing early then everyone and anyone will be able to get their 2pence in.
