It's so true. Being in a freelance world, I so often get asked to do stuff for nothing. I refuse now. Pay me, preferably with a deposit up front, or I walk. I can't live on fresh air.

While I can't speak as a freelancer this is a problem in my industry (contract research) as well. The number of sponsors who expect you to do work for free is incredible. It's always, can you just do this little bit extra? Well, yes we can, it will cost you x much as it wasn't in the original protocol and will cost us money to do. And as for the amount of advice that is given away for effectively nothing which should be charged as consultancy fees, don't get me started.
