Sierra will have a whole new file system that's NOT backward compatible
Eh?
How will that work for backups, for example?

Mark

Sorry, I mean it's not supported in anything before Yosemite - i.e. they're not going to 'back port' it. If you have backups of HFS+ partitions you can recover them to a APFS formatted drive, but you won't then be able to read that data on a (say) Lion equipped Mac. A Sierra Mac will be able to read an old mac's drive, but the old mac won't be able to read the Sierra mac's drive. So essentially if you have old macs you're going to have to stick with HFS+ for everything. However this is definitely been on the plan for a while, I wouldn't expect HFS+ to be supported forever.

And disk utilities, probably virtual machine software as well and a few other things will have to be updated to support the new file system I suspect.

They're also retiring AFS. All Mac file sharing from Sierra onwards will be SMB (SMB3, I assume).

Okay, cheers that makes sense.
Also, having just read a little on the topic since I replied to you above, it seems Time Machine will also have to work differently than it now does because the hard links in the OS will be replaced with snapshots, so I suspect Time Machine will be re-written.
I also quite like the variable amount of encryption that is at user level.
There's a lot going on with MacOS once you scratch the surface.

I miss that toy - my uncle brought it back from the States, it was the only one I ever had but it was great.

Microsoft's Windows 10 forced update is so aggressive, it got sued big time | TechRadar
http://www.techradar.com/news/computing ... me-1324053

There's no way she hasn't heard of Windows 10, is there? Unless all her updates happened while the PC was left on overnight, and even then... It's priceless that MS found themselves in this position though. There was another recent story where they effectively cost a charity $87k and endangered lives, because a laptop used to keep environmentalists safe from armed poachers with a satellite visual feed and connection started downloading an update of some description. MS have been utter w@nkers with 10.

Though some people can't be helped - I told everyone in work the score with updates etc and they still went and signed up to 10.

'My Steam downloads are really slow!' Yeah, that'll be those massive updates and your ISP.

'I can't play videos any more!' Yeah, you'll need to download something like VLC. What? No, you'll need to find it yourself.

'My laptop continually reboots!' Yeah, I fcuking warned you they wouldn't test the updates, didn't I?

But wait!

That made me wonder if there's a market for just colourfully funky plastic ones. Joe Average won't give a crap about switches, colour and form factor though...

I hope it's waterproof, so you can use it after we chuck both you and your keyboard in the sea.

I knew you could inject Teletext into a Pi's signal. I didn't know it had moved along like this.
