Capaldi's Who was talking to the robot man about the broom that's had thee new heads and two new handles - is it the same broom?

Even through he was talking about the robot man's self replacement strategy, you know he was referring to himself as well.

Continuity? Well, err, they try but you can get so bogged down in canon that it can stifle future creativity. Take Star Trek - it got to the point religious doctrine that everything must make sense to canon, so Voyager got very claggy, and by the time they got to Enterprise it was so hard to connect the dots without making a mess of it, they made a mess of it. JJ Abrams had to reboot to get any joy back into the franchise.

Who's continuity is being treated with respect, but not slavishly. By now, he should be running into his past (and future) selves at least once a series.

IMO, the thing with Ecclestone being 'the last Time Lord' was actually an attempt by them to basically bin all the previous continuity and start again with a bare slate - literally (in story terms) throw the whole history of Doctor Who on the fire. Of course the more.. vociferous end of the fan base wouldn't let them get away with there not being Daleks and Cybermen and what have you, so they chickened out and brought the history back piece by piece. There are bridges between 'old' Who and 'Modern' Who, but IMO it's probably best to think of New Who as a whole new story/time line, with only broad connections to 'old' Who. I certainly wouldn't expect something that happened in 'old' Who to have continuity with New Who. If they have a story they want to tell and old who continuity gets in the way, continuity gets quietly forgotten.


Who, if you count all the TV series, films, books, radio shows, online flash game etc etc etc is probably now impossible to write a coherent narrative and maintain exact 'canon' as it stands. Nevertheless, you're right there are some fans who know ALL of it and get upset if the new series deviates from it. Probably not people to be stuck in a lift with, if I'm honest.

For all the reasons above, that's why I liked the Trek film reboot. I'd never seen the previous films or even a full epp of any series. And then they seem to have rushed Darkness

Well I really liked this episode, mainly due to how the triumph of getting a dalek to recognise good is then turned to ash as the hatred the doctor has for the dalek turns it back. Forcing the doctor to realise he isn't the benign person or a force for good that he hopes he is.
Just a quick thought.

That episode mirrored Eccleston’s Dalek episode in a few places. In that story, the DAlek told the Doctor that he would make a good dale. That happened again.

There was also a point where the Doctor was holding two wires and agonising over it, just like he did the Genesis of the Daleks. At first take, I thought this was going to be a silly story, but I thought it was genuinely a good one.

Also - watch Capaldi’s hands. He really knots them up at times. They are pretty wiry anyway, but he really does pull some unnatural shapes with them.

There were a couple of things that bugged me:
- If the Doctor managed to materialise the TARDIS around the female soldier why not get both of the crew? It's not as if he was pressed for space after all.
- The 'good' Dalek had a somewhat different gun from the others which appeared to have a considerably greater rate of fire which was incredibly handy in the varrious fire fights.
- The 'good' Dalek had lowered the ships defences and clearly knew the layout of the ship as well. This would presumably have been transmitted to the other Daleks so why were they charging straight into the teeth of the human defences when they had plans that would have let them outflank the humans and get round behind them in a pincer movement? The 'good' Dalek switched from attacking the humans and managed to scoot round behind the rest of the Daleks to surprise them so there was no need to try and burn through blast doors.

Having said all that, still thoroughly enjoyed the episode. Roll on Saturday.

I think there was something on the BBC website about this weekends episode (6 September) being re-edited to remove a beheading scene in light of recent events.

I thought he materialised a time capsule around the female soldier, not the TARDIS.

I have no idea what a time capsule is - I don't remember hearing him mention one before.

I was under the impression the TARDIS was the the time capsule. I thought that's what it was referred to (or something along those lines anyway) in The Doctors Wife episode but I'm not 100% sure

It is taking a little bit of time (no pun intended) but this incarnation of The Doctor is slowly re-discovering who he is.
There was some nice little moments in this weeks episode (Robots of Sherwood), but I think the story was a little weak. Still, I really liked Into the Dalek, so a weak story after that only reinforces what a good episode the second of this season was.

Yes - the TARDIS is the time capsule. I can only think that the bit of it that projects into our reality can be materialised around something. So anything that will fit into a regular Metropolitan Police Box.

I'm not looking forward to this week's episode, it's the stuff my nightmares are made of, well, that and Daddylonglegs

That's what Doctor Who is about. The BBC used to get complaints that it was too scary. They really need to try to get that vibe back.

I get the sentiment that if she IS going to leave, then that’s the Christmas special spoiled for all of us right from the start - we know the Big Thing it brings. I expect they are trying to keep one step ahead of the tabloids and gossip magazines who’d want to spill every bean they can find before transmission.
