Well it looks like I might actually get to see it. The mother-in-law is coming up for a couple of days so we might nip out to the cinema one evening and she'll have the little 'un. Good or bad I'm desperate to see it before it finishes on the big screen.

Wow, harsh one Mark.
Oh well, seems it's just marmite. I guess that's what makes the world go round. (Either that or love/money/politics, not sure).

Not read any of the thread yet, but saw the film last night. I guess it is like marmite, in that everyone else seems to love it or hate it and I'm pretty indifferent to it. Not sure what to think of the film. The effects and 3Dness was pretty amazing, though I think it's one of those 'halfway house' technologies that there was a thread about. Sometimes it was amazing, and sometimes you were pretty aware it was an effect and didn't quite work. Storywise, it wasn't that engaging and was very predictable, it took so many things from other films. There was a bit where he destroyed a big ship and it was just like the fall of the deathstar. I just kept thinking throughout the film, "ooh, that's just like such and such a film". I think if I'd seen it in 2D, I'd have been very disappointed. Can't work out what I think about it really. I think I expected to be blown away, and I wasn't so that's left me a bit disappointed. Had it not had the hype and I'd gone in with no prior knowledge, I'd probably have loved it.

The more I hear the more I don't want to see it. Hype ruins so many films these days. I much prefer watching the ones I know nothing about.

Hype really does spoil films. I couldn't see what the fuss was about with The Full Monty or American Beauty, and I think it was all down to hype.

Thing is, there's a lot of anti-hype here and on the web. For those that hated Avatar, did you see Wolverine? Which was worse?

I felt the same about Slumdog and Mamma Mia

I went in expecting it to be lots of pretty, shiny, CGI'd rubbish, but really quite liked it.

For the record I never hated Avatar. In all honesty the story of Wolverine was better than that of Avatar. I didn't spot any blending problems in Wolverine. The plot of Avatar was better than Wolverine. The acting in Wolverine was better than the live action of Avatar. I could go on. Each film has it good and bad points. Neither was overall better or worse than the other. Mark

I just HAVE to take issue with that. Wolverine was utterly disgusting. The CGI was disgusting (especially the claws). The plot holes and continuity problems were glaringly obvious. Hugh put in a good performance, as did Taylor Kitsch and Ryan Reynolds (for five seconds). How you can say the story was better than Avatar, I just don't know. Even the main character forgets the bloody plot!!!

Right, just logged out of Hotmail and saw this story about 15 sci-fi films better than Avatar. Thought I'd share:
1) Blade Runner 2) Aliens 3) Back to the Future 4) Empire Strikes Back 5) District 9 6) 2001 7) Flash Gordon 8) The Matrix 9) Minority Report 10) Pitch Black 11) Brazil 12) The Terminator 13) Starship Troopers 14) The Fly 15) The Thing
Whilst there are some great movies in there, I just can't help but think it re-emphasizes the marmite point. There's clearly a torrent of hate for this movie. Even bigger than the one that followed Titanic 12yrs ago.

Just got back from the film. I was going to put something about it being pocahontas but Bally beat me to it. Anyway the film.....
3D - very very good. Best 3D ive seen in a film. Its not like some others ive seen where its 2D with the odd obvious 3D scene thrown in. Its much more integrated and you almost forget about it. That said when there was a bit of fast action I struggled to follow it a little bit. Could be my eyes though lol
CGI - again very very good. Pandora looks stunning. It didnt take me long to accept the alien race either. No Jar Jar Binks here. Some might say they've seen more realism in other films but it fits perfectly for the film IMO. I think it'd look just as stunning in 2D to be honest.
Overall - I enjoyed it. It might not make my top 10 of all time but as a whole cinema experience it was right up there. It had enough of a mix of story, love and action to keep me and the missus entertained and thats no bad thing. Of course it steals from other films/stories but it manages to entertain without being terribly original. I say leave your critics hat t home and just enjoy the ride.
Thumbs up from me.
