From what I have read on forums/fora don't hold your breath for any OS updates from the telcos.
Tmobile are definately slow with them and uncommunicative

Thing is as usual it's down to telcos applying their crap to the devices, branding etc It's why the Nexus had this because it was really a sim free phone Other problems are companies being slow to develop so 1.6 devices are still coming out while I started on 2.1

Which is why the iPhone is better, at the moment, from a user and developer perspective. All supported models (can) run the latest version of the OS from the same day. If you walk into a store today, you will find Android phones with versions ranging from 1.6 to 2.1. Yes, the Desire and Nexus One have 2.2 available for upgrading, post sale, but there is no excuse for selling 1.6 devices today, let alone launching them (2 new 1.6 phones were launched in May and June, nearly a year after 2.0 came out!)... By the time the currently planned 2.1 phones are released, 3.0 will be the current version...
We don't get branding over here, but the manufacturers are also very slow in releasing updates - they seem to look at the smartphone market from the Microsoft Windows Mobile perspective; you want an upgrade? Buy a newer / better phone. This is something Microsoft is, allegedly, abandoning with Windows Phone 7, which will not allow manufacturer or carrier branding and will get over the air updates as new features are released.

Got the HTC Desire on Saturday as an upgrade (with a little money) on Vodafone, 2 days in and I'm loving it. The GF with her 3GS keeps trying to out do me but to no avail yet….

It looks like Microsoft are going in the right direction. That sounds like a better policy than Android.

The new Dell Streak, went on sale this month, has Android 1.6, Google want to bring 3.0 out in the Autumn and Dell want to upgrade it to 2.0 before Christmas...

That's not what I am hearing. They want to skip 2.1 and go straight to 2.2. And there is no way it will take until Xmas too...

Cheers, I did see the Xperia, but IMO that's one ugly looking handset. It also only runs Android 1.6 - not to mention the screen is lacking compared to competitors. I got the Desire in the end.

Is the user happy? I'm probably getting one around Christmas time, if everything goes to plan

lol, not good enough!
Well, I guess as long as you know before December it'll be soon enough for me. All I've played with so far was a dead demo version with a stick-on screen - now used as a toy for a 4 year old!

Well I got one on Saturday and basically I’m loving it..... Took a bit of messing about with to get it all looking and working the way I wanted (but that’s half the fun). The only thing I would say I'm not overly impressed with is battery life but its early day so we will see what it's like once I stop picking it up for a play every 2 mins. The guy in the shop also warned me it took about 6 charges for the battery to work to its full potential.
The Vodafone model comes with free sat nav and you can add a free app for voice instruction if that’s any use to you.

Yeah, I just wiped the floor with my mate and his iPhone 4 last night. His compass kept pointing in random directions.
