A 'backup copy' of the film was handed to me and I knew the quality was gonna be rubbish, but I just wanted to get a feel for the film so I let it run a little bit. The start struck me as being a bit like Aliens, getting to know how the characters react to each other and getting the background info out of the way. I don't mean anything by this, but I did notice Cameron using a lot of shots and techniques that you wouldn't normally associate with his films even in the first few minutes It was enough to let me know that I'll give the movie a go via the proper channels come the time (though I still have my doubts about it)

Just been to see it in 3D, and I was really impressed, more so than I thought I would be. Once you forget about the 3D aspect and the CGI, it's totally engrossing. Every now and then something 3D will catch your attention, such as foliage in the foreground or the dancing fire flys (for want of a better description, you'll know what I mean when you see them). But the 3D isn't in your face or obvious - it adds to the experience, sure, but doesn't get in the way.
However, just a wee warning... Don't know if anyone else suffers from vertigo, but some of the scenes when they're leaping off the flying creatures or climbing sheer cliffs, really freaked me out a lot. You really feel like you're falling with them. Sweaty palms and had to look away in these bits. Of course, if you have no problems with heights then this shouldn't affect you. Guess I'm just a big wuss!
Overall, thoroughly enjoyable, but you really need to see it in 3D at the cinema - I suspect it won't have the same impact on DVD/blueray at home, even in 2D I think it would lose quite a lot. Not my favourite James Cameron film, that has to go to Aliens, I think, but it's up there in my top 10 films. I'd give it 8/10.

There are also a few poor movies in there too. I'm surprised someone could suggest that Back to the Future, Flash Gordon, Pitch Black or Brazil are really better than Avatar. 2001 is a yawn fest though I can appreciate it was groundbreaking for its time. Each to their own.... I liked Titanic. There, I said it.

I liked it it's a beautiful movie on so many level, if only because it talks about the fight of someone reviving after an accident (sort of the same theme than it's all gone Pete Tongue which is a great movie also). It's an environmentalist movie but so are the lord of the rings movies and people didn't whine about that half as much

There's more to a film than effects and there's not much more to this film than effects.

I liked it, but I wouldn't have said it was a great movie. Good, but not great. I was doing stuff whilst watching it, so maybe that was where I went wrong.

It's all gone Pete Tongue : it's the movie about a DJ who becomes deaf and has to live in a silent word until he realizes he can still sort of hear bass. IT's a terribly sad movie

I liked that one. People thought it was going to be a banging clubbing film. Loved the coke badger haha. Paul Kaye is a brilliant actor. He said he was on poppers when doing some of the coke scenes. Lots of people got pissed off as they thought it was a documentary and he was a real DJ. If I remember correctly some walked out of the cinema when I went to see it.

We took the kids to see Avatar in 3D today. Obviously it was visually stunning and the music score was great too. A far as the film itself, It was, for me, a bit like a sci-fi twist on Little Big Man. The one thing I wasn't too keen on was the 3D aspect. It worked, if your focus was on the area of the screen they expected, and this is almost inevitable during the faster paced latter half. But I found the effect annoying during the first half, simply because you have the time to take in more of the surroundings, rather than concentrate on this pre-defined focal point. It was almost disorientating - I thought their range of depth of focus was too vast and it spoiled the experience a little.

Does Avatar Steal From Roger Dean?http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news ... oger-dean/I don't think there's much of a case myself, and I'm pretty sure I've seen floating mountains and islands in many a computer game

One reviewer described the storyline as like "Dances With Smurfs" Which is pretty accurate.
