I had a feeling you would know. I'f I'm not totally crazy, it was you (as well as another one) that told me what it was last time. Thanks, Heather. Mark

Having not played my bass in over a year, and now having new strings on it, after just playing for half-an-hour the fingertips on my left hand are a little tender right now. It's that funny feeling of localised burning. (8+) It's been some time since I last had that sensation.

If you wanna improve that, you might consider trying one of these: http://www.play.com/Search.html?searchstring=powerball&searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0I have a 250hz model and it really does help with grip, and forearm and finger strength.

Hold your fingers under cold running water for 10 minutes. Also, until your fingertips get used to the strings, restrict your playing to 10 minutes at a time for week. That should give your fingers time to start to callous over.
