I just realised that a friend of mine was the name carrier for Solomon Islands!

Better than being the namecarrier for The Former Yugosalvian Republic of Macedonia . Tell your friend she was seen on TV by a billion people! If it was me, that would freak me out a touch. There are some people who don't like sport, Fair enough. There are some people who don't like some aspects of the olympics. Fair enough. There are even some people who don't like the fact we have a BBC. They are idiots but they are entitled to their views. I do like all these things. Right now, this is what is provided for me to watch on TV. Each blue section is a live piece of sport, with the best people in the whole damn world competing at it. And quite a lot of it is in HD. For less than a tenner.. With all due respect, stick your grumpiness where etc. For the next few weeks, I'm Mister Happy Happy Joy Joy..

I watched the cycling most of the weekend 9due to the length it takes for them to finish the road races ) It was a crying shame that most of the teams in the mens road race were doing a negative race ala make sure cavendish isnt anywhere near the front for a sprint finish. This of course meant that any of the big sprinters were shafted by their own teams. The womens race was thrilling, with constant break aways and the fear of mass carnage when the rain kept coming down. But please for the love of god do not let any reporter who doesnt have an inkling of the sport report on it. Last night on the main BBC news the reporter just showed his utter lack of knowledge and supreme ignorance when blaming Cav' for the lack of a medal and whilst I'm on a minor rant, will somebody please shoot Tanni Grey-thompson or at least let her comment on stuff she knows about.

Even though it is not the most exciting sport to watch, I really enjoyed the Archery. The men's team final especially. It came down to the last arrow and 2 seconds left to shoot it. It was very gripping.

There have been a few like that already. I've been watching a lot of it - well, all of it frankly - and I've seen on at least three occasions someone being required to get a gold (10 pointer) with their final arrow to stay in competitions and doing so. To do it in the final though, oh my. That's a target a few inches across, over 200 feet away, in the wind, with a bow and arrow, to win an Olympic gold medal...
I was watching the clay pigeon shooting yesterday and the woman who won hit 99 clays out of 100. In the actual final (which was the last 25) she hit every single one.
The ones who run and jump and throw tend to be the ones that get all the headlines but the skill levels of the the people competing in the 'minor sports' is just as astonishing.

You see, to me, those feats are far more impressive than someone who can run a bit.

Did anyone else watch the GB vs Algeria volleyball game late last night? Not beach volleyball, 'proper' volleyball, six a side in an arena. What a sport that is. It's fast, it's tactical, it requires great team work. Beach volleyball is a pale imitation, just wearing sexier pants. Game ran on until about 12:45, GB had never even won a set in a women's Olympic volleyball game before, but they managed to beat Algeria 3-2 (I know, spoilers..). Atmosphere was excellent.
More of this kind of thing.

The super slow motion shots of archers releasing while the raindrops are falling around them look amazing...

Have you seen the "bullet-time" sweeping camera motion in the gymnastics yet? That was pretty good viewing too. Mark

I haven't no, although I've seen it used in other sports. I'll keep an eye out; if I can find a spot in the schedule to watch any gymnastics that is .
