And...the campaign has started today. I really thought it had started a while back, what with the posturing and bickering between various camps in the field.

I received the London election manifesto today, most candidates want out. Also talking about immigrants like dirt. Starting to feel really unwelcome here.

A pro-exit stance doesn't mean they hate people from the continent, you know. They probably do, but that's not necessarily what it means.

You have to realise, people who hate 'foriegns' generally hate all the foreigns apart from the ones they actually know. It's all about the bogeyman.

Yeh and what's he? Lithuanian or something, right? Bloody Lithuanian bogeymen, coming here and claiming benefits so he can send them home to his wife. I bet he's a suicide bomber too. Bloody ISIS. It's about time someone closed these borders so me, Chanelle and the kids (Rooney and Kayla-mai) can walk home from the offy without worrying about getting blown up or where our next benefit cheque is coming from. Bloody Lithuanian bogeymen.

It is interesting, for many Germans, I'm "acceptable". I hear people ranting about "bloody immigrants", I then point out that, actually, I am one of those "bloody immigrants"! Yeah, I don't count. It seems anyone coming from North and West of Germany is acceptable and aren't really immigrants, in that respect... I am an immigrant, just like all those others, stop putting me on a pedastal!

Looks like the Out campaign is reverting to the usual dog-whistle arguments. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-e ... m-36126993“Look, foreigners” is pretty much all they can talk about. Try to get them to talk about anything else - the economy for example and they fall apart. You’ll notice that the intervention of Obama has been met not with an form of robust rebuttal, but by telling him to “keep his nose out”. Basically, “foreigner begone” again. I wonder what the response from the Goves and Farages of this world would be had he come down on the other side.

Political science indicates both sides have little option. To win a vote where many of the voters are undecided it would be nice of somebody offered some cheerful ideas, but fear of losing what they already have is the factor that determines how people actually vote. So one side over-hypes the risk to our economy, and the other goes mental about interlopers.

What with the US presidential candidates promoting xenophobia and the UK as well, it is looking like the 30s all over again...

Shows just how well the debate is going. I'll be glad when it's all over, regardless of the result.
