Gulliver's Travels circa 1726 had a floating island called Laputa.

They are a mainstay of the fantasy genre, especially in literary.

Avatar gets November 3D Blu-ray release

James Cameron has revealed that Avatar won't be getting a 3D Blu-ray release until November, confirming that the film will not be among the first movies released on the 3D home format.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Cameron announced that Avatar will get a special edition DVD and Blu-ray 3D release in the winter, but a standard non-3D version will hit shops – in the US at least – 22 April.

Fox-trot

It's a touch annoying that Fox has decided to do the dreadful double-dip on the film. This used to happen to DVDs every few years – special edition, extended edition, definitive edition, milking-the-cash-cow edition – but now it seems that distributors are happy to bring out various versions of a movie in the same year.

The last major release to get this sort of treatment was Watchmen.

A November release for the 3D version means that a number of 3D Blu-rays will be on the shelves first – including Monsters Vs Aliens and Cloudy, With A Chance Of Meatballs.

Panasonic, who helped Cameron with the equipment to film Avatar, recently showed off its Panasonic Viera TX-P50VT20 3D TV, which will be one of the first to hit the UK.

Regarding the continual re-releasing of films, it'd need to be something truly special to get me to buy a film over again... There can't be that many geeks who care enough in that sense to make it profitable, can there? :?

I will wait till the milking the cash cow DVD edition comes out then buy it on eBay! :D

Although I dont see this as being the same as milking people for special editions with a 'super special never before seen edition' just around the corner as the first version out is the standard version and the 2nd one will be 3D, as in proper 3D to run on 3D hardware.

I saw it in 2 D and it was perfectly watchable. While some scenes would have been more impressive in 3D I do not think that I missed out on too much.

Don't know if it's been said before here.

Heard it described yesterday as "dances with smurfs"

made me laugh.

Enjoyed the film however, 3D effects not bad, generally added to the film, not over the top.

The first German review, back when it was released in America, called it Poccahontis meets the Smurfs.

I disagree. The 3D isnt like other so called 3D movies I've seen i.e. its a 2D film with 3D scenes thrown in for effeft. In Avatar the 3D is totally integrated into the film that it becomes natural. IMO.

Beat me to it. Was gonna say the same. Seeing this in 2D is wrong at the cinema.

Unless you have a vision problem, or you can't afford the frankly extortionate ticket price, or you have no interest in 3D in general.
I could go on but I just got bored. (8+p

Dodgy eyes and ticket prices aside this is the first movie to be made from the ground up with new 3D technology so to not see it as the director intended is to get less than the 'full' experience.

Seriously Mark. When will people learn that my sweeping generalisations do have exceptions, but most of the time I'm just plain right.
