Amazon reviews - nearly bought a crap Samsung external DVD drive. The idea was not to fanny around with a power lead any more, but apparently it comes with a sh1t USB cable and the whole set-up is prone to FAIL.

My little £20 Samsung USB DVD burner has been rock solid ever since I bought it - and despite coming with a Y shaped USB lead, only needs one plug for power and data.

Have you been plugging it into USB3 ports? That seemed to fix the problems others were having, but there were any number of reports of other things going wrong so I didn't bother. Plus, most of the reviews said it came with a standard lead!

Had to get out the soldering iron today. Got the video transmitter working with the Ronin power supply, the portable power supply, chucking out video from both the GoPro and the Canon DSLR today. Wireless video is now a thing in my world.

So there was a thread somewhere last year but it died and obviously there's not a great upswell of interest but anyway. Great British Bake Off. Finished last night. Obviously, spoilers. The winner was someone who started off at the beginning of the competition really badly. I mean, how she was still in it after two weeks nobody knew. She had major confidence issues and stressed herself out to the point where she was making really basic errors that, in hindsight, she didn't know why she did them - a classic sign of someone under so much stress their brain just stops working. But week by week she got better. Week by week she figured out she could actually do the stuff she was being asked to. And in the final, she was head and shoulders above the other two - she didn't make any mistakes or panic, she just got things done. It was quite.. uplifting to see the change her having to work hard and gaining success from doing so caused. Then, after winning the competition, this was the speech she gave... If that's not someone who has just won at life, I don't know anyone who has.

GBBO Final was indeed very uplifting to watch. They even managed to get Mary B to tear up which I don't think I've seen happen before. A clear and deserving winner over the course of the weekend. I'll be frankly stunned if the Apprentice, which is replacing GBBO, manages to be quite as uplifting somehow. Mind you, I don't watch the Apprentice for uplifting (or cake for that matter).

TBH I'd never bothered with GBBO. Thought it to be boring. But missus has an interest in baking (and I generally like cooking), so we watched one of the earlier episodes and basically got hooked. Noted down a few ideas for our own recipes.
What I did notice was that the winner became good about halfway through - not necessarily the best, but steady progress in each competition.

Sweet. Only £79 for Sony to fix my laptop per issue. No more having to wedge the power cable in at a certain angle to charge it. (A problem made worse by the two minute battery life).
