So Rebecca Loos is involved as well! Not surprising really. ;)

The West is rapidly running out of sympathy for the country, IMO. The Eye has picked up on that and I personally don't think it was over-the-top.

There is also the point that, basically, they're not poor. Pakistan is actually a pretty wealthy country and India next door is, if not the richest country in the world, probably among the top four. The difference between this and say Haiti is everyone knew they had nothing and couldn't look after themselves. In the case of Pakistan, it's more that the people in the country who have the money don't give a toss about the people who don't. There's a definite sense of 'why should we bail them out when they're capable of bailing each other out, they just don't want to'.

Fast forward a couple of weeks... "We need your aid! Give us money! The west is not helping us fast enough!"

That's the equivalent of judging the entire Uk by a few twats in Burnley having BNP posters, one photo is a very very restrictive view of a massive population.

I got this joke by text approx. 1 hour after the second WTC tower fell:

"Q. What's 100ft high, 1000ft wide and has 6000 legs?"

I laughed my ass off. Because I, like many others, cope with trauma by making jokes about it. I'm not trying to be horrid - it's just the way I'm wired.

I was shocked at the time, but I find it hard to feel much now. Given all the [LIFTED] that's gone on before and since, I find it hard to think of any of these things as much more than news events. Selfish as it may seem, they haven't directly affected me and where do you draw the line - the king's cross fire, Hatfield, the tsunami, the blitz, the holocaust, 11/9, 7/7, the Yorkshire ripper, that dude who fell asleep and went into a train, etc?

I watched a documentary about 9/11 this afternoon, I was unexpectedly very moved by the hi-jacking and the people who had to phone their loved ones, I think it's important not to confuse political self-interest with tragedy, the people making bombs in Bradford aren't the same people who are suffering from the earthquake. Simialrly the people who were above 79th floor aren't the ones making profit from oil.

On a personal level, of course it's tragic and that sort of thing always gets me going, but let's face it, people die every day.

We have a 24 year old graduate, who's travelled far and wide (as far as Australia) after her degree.

"9/11? What's that?"

That's either indicative of most young people these days being completely self-absorbed, or the whole thing passed her by because she was a self-absorbed 15 year old at the time.

Either way, facepalm as you say.

Maybe they were a bit confused, because nothing important happened on November the 9th.

Either that, or she's just resilient to US Government branding and if you'd have said the WTC attacks in NYC, she might've known what you were talking about? Just maybe...

Could be. I realise my statement was pretty sweeping and generalised. Of course there are some younger people who are not self-obsessed and self-absorbed. ;)

That's like not knowing about Eastenders though. I don't watch it, never have, but I sure as hell know what it is.
I don't like football, but I know that there's a chap called Rooney who's having a spot of trouble on and off the pitch. I'm aware of the existence of a club who're nicknamed The Gunners but are more appropriately named Arsenal.
I know all sorts of things about stuff I've absolutely no interest in and never involve myself in.
I'm amazed that perhaps the most pivotal event of the last 50 years, which has shaped the world we live in today, has apparently gone under her radar because of it's popular 'slang' name.

I'm not. I don't know any of the records by Jaaaaasan Daaahhhrulo or any of his ilk, but I can recognize one from how [LIFTED] it sounds. Branding is everything these days. Especially for generation z. Show her a pic of the towers, and you *might* get a reaction.

That said, at 15, she was probably drinking white lighting, shagging or some other teen activity and therefore not into watching the news. It is possible I suppose. </way worse than Heather>
