Certain aspects of "gravity" are pretty irrefutable. Specifically; heavy stuff falls to the ground when unsupported.

However, the finer details of exactly how and why are very much the centre of modern scientific study.

There are many aspects of religion which I hold open to ridicule; but using "bad science" as an argument is to my mind an even greater "sin" than playing the "faith" card.

Evolution is still a theory

True, however questioning what someone tells you as truth is never a bad thing. I never 'used' bad science, by calling something the truth or fact does require proof of some form or another to place it beyond any reasonable doubt, even then it may be incorrect.

I think your mixing up what Theory means in this sense.
There is a difference when using it in a technical/scientific sense and a non tech/sci sense.
Usually by people like creationist when trying to advance thier mumbo pseudo science.

Quote:
in modern science the term "theory", or "scientific theory" is generally understood to refer to a proposed explanation of empirical phenomena, made in a way consistent with the scientific method. Such theories are preferably described in such a way that any scientist in the field is in a position to understand, verify, and challenge

Quote:
are used in non-technical contexts to mean an untested idea or opinion. A theory in technical use is a more or less verified or established explanation accounting for known facts or phenomena: the theory of relativity. A hypothesis is a conjecture put forth as a possible explanation of phenomena or relations, which serves as a basis of argument or experimentation to reach the truth: This idea is only a hypothesis.

Nope if it is Jesus we are talking about then it was two days.

Died Friday (late on), still dead Saturday (day one) up for breakfast Sunday morning (day 2). If we are going to be pedants let us be pedants.

:)

If we're going to be pedants:

  • Jesus died at 3pm on Friday
  • He was buried before sunset
  • He was seen by Mary Magdalene early on Sunday morning
  • His resurrection is described as happening "on the third day" not "after three days"

;)

For the record I would have told him to shut up myself.

Firstly he should have prefaced all his statements with phrases like "I believe that..." - even out of politeness. Secondly believing something to be true does not automatically make it true - that's why we call it a "faith" . Thirdly, believing something to be true does not mean others have to believe likewise or be badgered about it. Fourthly his use of the phrase "if you can't handle that then that's your problem" shows a horrible arrogance, a lack of care for the welfare of the person he's talking to and a shocking ignorance of scripture. Fifthly he shows a defensiveness that shouldn't be necessary if he truly believes what he's saying. Sixthly there's a time and a place and the middle of a busy restaurant isn't it.

But seventh and most importantly, if he was saying it loudly and publicly enough so that you could hear him then he was being at best an pig-ignorant tit and at worst a troll.

And if he ruined even a part of your evening then you deserve an apology. So here it is: Sorry. :x

Yeah, I know, but it was still a day and a half no matter how you twist it.

Here’s what’s grinding my gears at the moment. I’ll have to do this big so you can see what I mean:

NEW FOR ‘10

PIC ‘N‘ MIX

Not much wrong with that you’d think - but look again at the apostrophes. They are wrong. For omitted stuff, you need to use the closing glyph:

NEW FOR ’10

PIC ’N’ MIX

After all, you don’t see this:

don‘t

I don’t blame the software which just assumes that you are using them as quotes - I do blame the person typing who should know that this is wrong, and should be able to correct the problem.

Don’t get me started on the leading BBC News 24 uses in their captions then.

There would be quite a few entries in a separate BBC pedantry thread.

I think Heather would be a regular contributor to that one.

Don't tempt me. I still get annoyed by the use of Arial for the red headlines on the weather forecasts when the whole rest of the branding uses Helvetica and a tweaked Gill Sans.

It's been that way for five years or so. Does nobody else notice?

Exactly correct.

Please be pedantic about it with fail-merchants - it annoys me soooooooooooo much. :x

Yes.

And every time I see it I die a little.
