I did something very silly - I ruined my sleep hygiene.

Worked really hard over the weekend. Had Monday and Tuesday off. Got up early yesterday but at lunch time, I went to the chippy. After a heavy fish meal, I went for a nap. For four hours! Hence now awake at silly o'clock.

Must get this sorted before I go back to work on Wednesday.

Gaaahh!

I decided to continue reading the Bourne Identity on my iPhone before going to sleep. Except i got close to the end. I had a choice - fall asleep and wake up refreshed for work, or continue to read the book. Given it's now 2am, I guess you can work out which option I went for.

The question is...do I download the next book and continue reading? I have to be up in four hours' time....

Well, download the next book and continue is the obvious answer.

But perhaps sleeping is the sensible one?? Especially considering your line of work! :P

Well, I decided to hold off and try to get some sleep. Managed four hours, which isn't too bad. It's enough for deep sleep, and it's about how long I sleep for when on nightshifts. I'm still at the stage where I don't feel tired. It'll be horrendous later on and I've just realised I've got no red bull left in the house. The work canteen/shop will be shut and none of the shops are gonna be open at this hour. Goddammit!

I always avoid caffeine when sleep-deprived - I find it tends to turn my focussed mind into a useless scattergun.

I drink lots of water and eat lightly to stop the brain juices jamming up

I can cope with four hours' sleep when doing a "normal" weekday shift. But if it's an extended daytime shift, or on-call, especially over the weekend or nights when there's a limited crew, I cannot cope without caffeine, if only to stop me from falling asleep.

Today, I ran on adrenaline all day long and didn't "hit the wall" and drop off.

Well sitting here watching the American football on Channel 4, and going through paperwork. At some point I need to go out and take some rubbish out, but when? It is only -11 C outside.

I could have posted here at 3:00am as I was awake, but helping The Wench get through her asthma attack seemed more important somehow.
