its the bacteria of an american, it was found in usa so it further proves that americans are aliens, no wonder they act all overly eccentric etc

Actually, most caucasian Americans have European descent. Even the native Americans probably came from northern Europe.

There's certainly North American DNA in some parts of Iceland.

I joke about americans are aliens due to their eccentric nature, dont see how that is racist, just like I was labelled a racist in voice dub preferences with tintin, how some people are bizzare.  :x :P

Bit of a sweeping statement, I'd say they're no more eccentric than you.

Yeah but I bet they'll get over-confident and start some political monologuing, calling for Superman to come out of hiding and challenge them, smoking cigars in the White House, etc. Then bam! a fatal case of the sniffles.

found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today

Completely? From what I've read so far, it's only very slightly different.

If I understand correctly, the backbone of the DNA is chemically different by substitution of the P but the bases used to encode and replicate are the same as in us.

It's like having a motherboard that's made out of a different kind of plastic, but still has all the same components on...

Given the alien environment these cells were discovered in, it's not surprising that phosphorous might be substituted for the next element down the period which was vastly more abundant and functionally similar. Interesting, but not surprising.

I'm sure I've read somewhere of some form of life which actually does use a different base pair combination, but I've forgotten it now. Anyone remember?

No, but it goes against every other example of life ever found. I think many of us expected to see this day but it is interesting nonetheless.
