That sucks balls. Fact. But sometimes it is good to just get it out. I think you did that rather well.
I haven't lost a wife, but I'm starring down the barrel of a Christmas where I may lose my job and place to live. So whilst plenty of people *would* see it is as an opportunity, I wouldn't dare to offer such advice as I know just how bollocks it sounds at this stage.

TBH, I don't think he's got time for that. (8-p) I'd be visiting the CAB (assuming they're about in NI too) and/or a solicitor. Probably both.

What he said. It especially sucks that everything is happening at once. Have you been paying 100% of the mortgage? If so, I can't see how she can possibly take the house in it's entire value. It would be different if there were kids involved. I hope you get some good advice on this, because it's obviously a big deal and a complicated legal situation.

I'd be also wanting to know if these debts are...
a) Unsecured, or secured on the house. b) Just in her name, or both of you - obviously, if they're secured on the house then it involves you too.
Until you know this, I don't think you'll know exactly how much this will affect yourself. If you're still on speaking terms with your wife (and frankly, I'd totally understand if not!) then it might be beneficial to sit down with her to discuss the exact nature of the debts and how much you're implicated. I'd try and do this before you get legal advice, as they will likely ask you these questions, so it may save having another costly meeting with the solicitor. legal types love to drag this out to a second or third meeting to earn more!

Are you the new 007? Advice is an odd thing. It may help to have experienced a similar thing yourself, but I don't think it is exclusive. Humour, sympathy, good and even bad advice can at least let a friend know you are thinking about them and offering support when it is needed.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Thank you to everyone who who has posted. Ha. Yeah, sorry if you thought it somewhat negative in nature. Perhaps I should refrain from making such personally loaded comments in the future (it'll probably not happen, even though it should). Well, in all fairness, I think when you're trying to work these things out, it's really difficult to get the perspective of a third party that doesn't understand where both people involved are coming from, also I didn't want to drag out all my dirty laundry for everyone to see - which is why I've just stuck to the facts without going in to any really specific detail. You all seem to appreciate that it's a difficult time for me and that in itself is nice to know. It may just be my jumbled thoughts but I can't get a grip on what you're trying to say here, sorry. We have a mortgage on the house at the minute that we'll not cover with the sale of the house given the current state of the housing market. I personally think there'll be a £50-60k shortfall. I don't know if I'll be expected to make all of that up or as we are both signatories of the house I'll have to find my half of it and hers will be written off. I'd top myself if I wasn't. Cheers Chris and no, Heather. Just no. (8+p I'm hoping to make it across the water when all this is settled so I can say thanks to people in person. It's nice to have friends. All the debt is unsecured and separate from the house, which means that other than the mortgage, I have no other dealings regarding her debt. To everyone else in this thread that has been kind enough to respond that I haven't name checked, thank you also. As I said above, it's nice to have friends. Mark

My condolences Mark, hearing other's problems often puts ones own into perspective. We are all somewhat lucky to have a community here that will listen to us, we are all here for you just as you have been here for us at times.
All I can say is that I hope that things go as smoothly as they can in such circumstances and that things are brighter on the other side.
