There are loads of reasons why a back starts hurting - even intestinal problems can cause it. Therefore there is no one fix-it solution.

Due to a spinal cord injury, several musculo-skeletal injuries and a nasty bowel problem, I spend most of my days in some form of back pain. After some years of this I can give some general tips about what to do.

  • Take it easy - no heavy lifting etc.
  • Keep moving - mild exercise is good
  • Avoid sitting for long periods if possible; if not possible ensure good seating position.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them
  • Avoid painkillers
  • Suck it up ;)

Well I've been at work all day and that includes gentle exercise including lots of walking and today I spent about an hour laying and tidying cables - that was painful. I only got half of it done.

When I came home I had two paracetomol and a pint of strongish cider (8.2%) - I feel fine now lol

I will take it easy again tomorrow, and try to avoid the cabling if I can - the bending involved was pretty painful, although to be honest it's more twisting that hurts. Checking my blind spot when driving is dodgy, although it's not my neck, but my back that hurts.

I hope it's sorted by 28th when I'm going snowboarding!! Lots of twisting involved with that! At least I know that painkillers help, so I can take those on holiday if I need to. :)

Just don't drink and snowboard, a mate back home did snowboarding after three bottles of wine. He woke up the next morning to find he had broken his leg in 8 or more places...

I wouldn't drink as much as that on the mountain, but I always drink something. Helps with the cold on the lifts, especially on a windy January day in Switzerland! :)

I've already had a concussion from snowboarding sober, so there's no way I'd try it after a few drinks.

Just like peeing in wetsuits.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
