Queueing for tech. As Brooker says, 'moths to the flame'...

I have a t-shirt from the Apple WWDC 2007. :geek:

(I didn't actually attend, but I know someone who did.)

It has put me off queuing a bit.

:?

That's a good read.

I also dont understand the queuing thing. Not least for an electronic device that I could get a couple of weeks down the line anyway.

Me neither anymore.

When I first went to Austria skiing with my GF and her dad years ago I was thrown into the world where queues don't exist.

At the end of the day when my GF and her dad had made it to the bottom, I was still letting the old and kids on before me. Half an hour of me being the only person in a queue while everyone else around me wasn't and my need to queue disappeared.

I am now very adept at politely pushing to the front of any group of people.

 I went off the whole "excitement" thing about "cutting edge" technology when I found out that cutting edge technology is actually about 3 years ahead of the retail stuff we eventually get. If you spend £2,000 on a cutting edge PC now, Intel already have one on their desk that's double as quick.

One day, I am going to sit across the road from an Apple shop with either a catapult or a BB gun (spring powered, don't actually want to hurt them) and shoot at people queuing for the next MiPhone. This will annoy them but they wont come get me, because in doing so they will lose their place in the queue :D

I have four options locally but am not that fussed about a wait. I will probably order it online and wait till it arrives, even if it is suspected to be three weeks. I can at least get it engraved as well. Now looking for some pithy quote as I will be buying it for myself, so happy birthday is out.

I like that one

Here is a list of iPod engraving that they refused to put on. A bit US centric but some are pithy.

I find this queuing distasteful. People with far less money sleep rough on the streets of London every night. A few geeks do it, and they get news coverage.
