How much time off work have you guys had due to being unwell?

Eleven years offshore. Not one day off.

If you get ill on a rig, they give you whatever medication you need to keep going.

Couple of years ago due to food poisoning. Was off for 2 days.

I had botulism many years ago. That was really bad. Two days of sweating like a pig drinking gallons of water. Until monday morning when I had finally had a #2 and felt immediately better. It was a bank holiday so no time off work.

Did you spread the disease to many of your colleagues?

I wish work would remember that you're doing them a favour by staying away. As things stand, why risk a disciplinary for yourself, when it's better for you to make the rest of the workforce ill instead?

I've had time off work:

2 weeks due to a broken elbow.
Half an hour (before my shift was due to end) due to being carted out by ambulance, suffering an asthma attack. Amazingly, despite the ambulance being called by the general manager himself, and the entire senior management team witnessing my departure in said ambulance, the Personnel Manager wanted to give me a verbal warning for "missing" my shift - they only agreed to drop the matter after I kicked up a fuss with my line manager.

Actually, what his boss did is correct and I think may even be required by law. If you're off work sick for less than 7 days, you're required to fill in a 'return to work declaration'. The company are legally required to monitor and record their staff's sickness absences because if they have a lot of absence or peculiar pattern of absence it suggest a a workplace-related problem may need fixing. Essentially, it's for his own good that these kinds of things get recorded.

In Oli's case I suppose he could just have filled the form in beforehand or the boss could have done the paperwork and just asked him to sign it but it's not just his boss being arsey.

There is a difference between sickness and time off to see a doctor. It depends on how your employer records these things. I guess it's possible that recording it as sick was the only way to avoid having to take a days holiday.

As for myself, I think I've probably averaged about 1 day off a year due to illness over the last 9/10. Mostly due to migrane joy or some sort of food poisoning.

2 days off due to being electrocuted by 30k volts from a piece of kit at work
3 days off with a broken ankle done walking down the stairs at work (as a bonus I was forced to watch England get the ashes back :D )
1 day off because I broke a rib getting out of a bath on a training course.
apart from that the most Ive had is 1 week with flu/cough lurgie.

Eeep! I trust there were some serious questions asked about safety following the 30 kV one.

No drugs or party related accidents then? Or was that broken ankle as a result of falling down the stairs at the police station for not co-operating during interrogation? ;)

I had a manager like that. Back in the early to mid 90’s I severely did my ankle in while playing squash – basically I turned and my ankle didn’t. The whole of my leg went black from the foot to half way up my thigh
The Doc said it would have been better if I had broken it!

Anyway after a few days off I started going back to work on crutches. I had got physiotherapy booked - weekly sessions (and had arranged it for the end of the day) so as to keep inconvenience to a minimum

After a couple of weeks my manager said I was not to have any more as they could not afford to have me out of the office. After a bit of an argument I presented her with a letter saying that the firm was stopping me against medical advice from have physio and that if at any stage I had any leg / joint issues in the future that they would be liable – She backed down and and decided that maybe I should have the Physio after all
There are some really stupid managers – hmm maybe a new thread – the most stupid management you have worked for!
