In parallel to the famous maxim 'better to keep silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove you are one' I'd say you're better off out of it rather than being there if you think you might not enjoy it at all and come across as grouchy or whatever.

Ok, you may cop a bit of grief in the short term but, IMO, not being there, provided you can come up with a reasonable excuse, is likely to be better than the alternative in the long term. Better to not go to a wedding than go to it and do (or indeed, not do) something which causes it to be 'spoiled' to an even slight degree. And believe me, it doesn't take much for your average bride to consider their wedding day 'spoiled' by someone.

On a broader level though, you have to ask yourself this - if the choices someone has made are such that you really don't feel like being there on a day they consider so important, does the friendship actually still exist in anything but name? We all make choices that alienate us from people we once had fellowship with, that's the way life is. You move house, you change jobs, whatever. It's just.. change.

If you don't want to go to the wedding you could always go to the divorce party *cynical*

Cheers for the (almost too) sensible replies chaps n chapettes.
I suppose I'll chalk this up to being another one who got away.
Still undecided if I'll attend this ceremony or not - she's talking about visiting us, because she wants him to meet my family. I just hope he'll feel as awkward as I'm certain too.
Ah well, if nothing else, hopefully there'll be a free bar. And it's a trip to Chelsea, which is nice. Never spent much time there when I was in London.

If you attend a marriage ceremony it's a sign that you agree with and support the union.

If I didn't support the union, I would think long and hard before attending.
