If you're going on a date with someone, sitting in uncomfortable seats in a dark room for two hours hardly strike me as an ideal scenario. Plus, it's a terrible cliche.

Jon

The advantage of a 1st date as a movie is

- Its a safe place to meet
- My local cinema has a Bar so you can start with a drink
- After the film you have something to talk about

Overall I think they can he great 1st date – the hard part can be working out what to see

The first cinema date I went on was to see Alfie (the re-make with Jude Law) with a girl from work, I was 17. It was touch and go at first, I was way out of my depth (it was my first ever date) and she spent more time on her phone than watching the film. It picked up by the end of the night though and I got a decent kiss goodnight, which blossomed into a 3-year relationship. It ended there because I was an immature d*** head and had serious commitment issues.

The second cinema date I went on was only recently, it seemed to go well but fizzled out into nothing.

I may be going on another one this weekend with a girl from work, but nothing decided yet.

As others have said I find the cinema ideal as it gives you a common discussion point etc.

Our local cinema has a built in curry house with all you can eat buffet.
The food is good, but the cinema is poor. The one in town has much better seats.

Don't recall going on cinema dates...

Most of the women I've ever been out with have either been drinking in pubs or working behind the bar in pubs. :D

I've a sneaking suspicion that the Wench and I were actually married before we went to the cinema together. You cannot rush these things you know.

First date with the wife was to the cinema to see Davinci Code. That was after a nice Chinese buffet in the same centre.

2nd date with my other half was to seeTim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow," Jan 2nd 2000. I felt unwell throughout most of the movie but we're still together all this time later :)

Ironically I was later reprimanded after passing comment on Cristina Ricci's décolletage as depicted on the Sleepy Hollow poster

I remember taking a girl to see the first LOTR movie as a first date, what a bad idea. I think by the end we both just wanted to get out. (Not because the film was bad, but because we sat awkwardly for over 3 hours)

These days I'd rather go out for a drink or dinner as a first date.

+1. Actually, that's pretty much always been the case for me.

This totally shocks me.

I'm inclined to agree with the "common talking point" concept. Plus I love the cinema. For me, it's a genuinely magical place and anyone who can really get that about me, is somebody I probably wanna go on more dates with. Of course, for most of you, that's a stupid cliche. But I personally find the feeling of darkened corridors and grand lobbies, music, popcorn smell and the opening distributor logo to be a wonderful gateway to another world. But hey, what do I know...?

Shocks you? Really?

Meeting friends of friends in a pub and hitting it off then ending up carrying on drinking and chatting with a lass while everyone else has gone has been the start of several relationships for me. I guess the ones that have lasted some time were the ones that started off sober.

Take my current GF though, we were on the same course for 3 years, never spoke really, ended up in a pub together as we had mutual friends, got chatting, carried on drinking, afternoon turned into night when the confession comes from her that she's always fancied me. Jobs a good 'un. :D

Barmaids I've been out with have generally worked in local pubs when I was at Uni, well, and prior to that too come to think of it so they get to know you from that and it goes from there.

The thing is I guess the cinema is just a shared experience that can help stimulate conversation. That wouldn't have worked for me and my GF, it's taken me years to get her into sci-fi, of which she is now a convert to a degree. :D

Sorry, that probably should've had a </sarcasm> tag.

No Dan, it doesn't shock me in the slightest. From the little I know about you, it's a perfect fit

Ah right, sorry too early in the morning on a Friday for me to detect sarcasm. :D

Re your second comment, hm, not sure whether that's a compliment or a dig. It's fine either way.
