I vote turn your TV off and read some good books. :)

While I agree I need things to watch on the daily commute - when I read I go through a book every 3 days or so and it gets expensive

Might have to try

Arrested Development
Breaking bad

No libraries near you? Free books!

Eastbound and Down has had great reviews, I've been meaning to start on it.

People rave about The Wire. Personally I've never seen any of it.

A friend told me I should watch it: "Something nearly happens in every episode, you'd love it."

Here we go again.....!

It's one of the best television shows ever made.

**waits for Caz to disagree**

I'll second Arrested Development for funny. South Park and The Simpsons are funny, but not in the same league as "must see" TV IMO.
Fringe is excellent throughout.
Supernatural is largely excellent, funny and thought provoking in places.
Dexter is close to The Wire bracket.
Breaking Bad is on my list to watch.
How about:
Justified - I've only seen 4 eps, but superb character and acting all round with an intriguing premise (oh, and Timothy Olyphant who's amazing)
Deadwood - Another HBO triumph set in the old West with Lovejoy (Ian McShane) putting on a cracking accent (oh, and Timothy Olyphant who's amazing)
Into The West - Major award winning mini series from Spielberg set over 70 years during the American expansion into Indian territory from 1820-90. Stunning and some big themes and emotions with fantastic characters. (Think Band of Brothers in the West)
Sons of Anarchy - Ron Perlman (Hellboy) heads up an outlaw motorcycle club in California with some dark secrets from the past. JUST. BRILLIANT. Same league as The Wire and Dexter and jumps straight into a plot similar to Macbeth. Fantastically serialised, deep characters, Harleys (especially good with a 5.1 setup) and incredibly well balanced.

+1, House is excellent (well, up to Series 6).

House is the same show every single week. And is excellent most of the time but not all.

It does however, have an extremely compelling character in the titular Greg and a fantastic performace by Hugh.

Some of the finales and openers have been genuinely wonderful television. And that includes past season 6.

Hugh's accent annoyed me, and yes it's the same show every week.

Nonsense.

Yes, he solves medical mysteries each episode but, if you can't see further than that, you're wasting your time.

It is one of the few shows that has run to it's end rather than just having the plug pulled.

Dare I suggest, Eureka? 10 Seasons. Planned ending (I believe), although I've only seen a few episodes myself.

I love it. But it is the same show every week.
a) Patient presents
b) Misdiagnosis 1
c) Misdiagnosis 2
d) Misdiagnosis 3 (patient nearly dies and/or requires surgery)
e) Classic eureka/Sherlock Holmes moment
f) Case solved

It's a 42 minute crime procedural like so many before it, but with the cop being a doctor and the perp(s) being a medical problem of some kind.

BUT the characters are great, there is some great character development and arc storytelling and as I said, the premieres and finales have been some of most thought provoking and well done television ever.

And Prof, I think you're just picky about how people talk ;)

Person of Interest. It started last Tuesday. Give it a whirl. You might like it, you might not.

Hugh's accent is god awful, and yes, I couldn't see past the story of each episode, as okenobi's outlined below. And yes, I did feel like I was wasting my time.
Safe to say, I am not a fan of this programme.
