Is Star Wars science fiction? The oxford dictionary states that science fiction is " fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets." but as we all know, Star Wars is set "a long time ago "

I would say not. I wouldn't class things like Lord Of The Rings as Sci-fi for example.
I can see how some-films can have overlap between Sci-fi and fantasy, but they are not one and the same.

The Force in Star Wars comes across as fantasy.

Is Star Wars science fiction? - Yes - but I’d put it in pulp science fiction. It’s heritage comes from the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers serials. At best, it probably sits in the fantasy box just as comfortably. It’s really just a western with fancy clothes on. The story is not really science fiction at all - but it has been placed in that kind of context.
Is 2001 : A Space Odyssey science Fiction? - Yes. This is hard science fiction (file in the same box as Alien and Moon). It’s based on contemporary understandings of science, computing and space travel in the 1970s, and really it doesn’t deviate much from that. The science is interwoven into the fiction. It is much harder to separate story from carrier.
Is Firefly science fiction? Again - pulp sci-fi. Again, a western in space but with the imagery more obvious. However, the stories could be set anywhere, anytime. So, like Star Wars, the ”science ficton” element is the story carrier, not the story.
Is House M.D. science fiction? Not seen it. I expect it uses some medical knowledge to advance the story in a
Is CSI science fiction? Not seen it either. Well, I saw one episode once and I found it so fanciful that it didn’t really gel in my mind as anything other than a fanciful police drama.
Is M*A*S*H science fiction? Err - well if science fiction is about dropping people into a a barren, alien (and by this I don’t mean little green men) environment, stressing them out and letting the writer(s) explore how they react, then M*A*S*H has this covered.

I think it was a Mad Magazine spoof that said that the Force was only used when it would look good, not when it would actually be useful.

I'd have thought Star Wars is a fairy tale (hero rescuing princess) dressed up as science fiction just as Alien is a horror movie dressed up as science fiction.

Looking at the Annakin/Vader story, with the whole "betrayal/redemption" theme, I always thought it was almost Shakespearian. But yeah, as was mentioned earlier, you have the whole (jedi) knight rescuing the princess thing going on, so I'm really not convinced that Star Wars is Science Fiction.

I look forward to a considered response from the egg man, and no that's not sarcasm!

Yes it is, but at the same time there was a lot of stuff buried in there - from the ship to the creature itself - which were taken from the natural world. They were cranked up to 11, but there is still a decent foundation of ideas that give it more sci-fi credibility than Star Wars.

FWIW, William Shatner has been goading Star Wars fans by describing it as fantasy, and claiming that Star Trek is proper sci-fi.

Revisiting my earlier definition of sc-fi from the Ox-Dic: "fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets."

Star Trek does indeed tick all of the boxes, where as Star Wars does not. I still mean the "future" part

The only difference is that Star Trek has some humans (from Earth) in, Star Wars does not.
Everything else is very similar. Huge space ships, alien species, space battles, faster than light travel etc.

Yes, all religions are fantasy..... ;)

But if Sky start putting christian sermons on the Sci-fi channel on a weekend, there's going to be lots of pissed off people out there.
