As I already have a PS3, no, although maybe useful as a spare.

Load times on the PS3 are pretty short, as they are on the newer players. The discs with the BD-Java and BD+ stuff on it tend to have the longer load times, but the newer players should be able to cope with it. The older players could technically meet the standard and often offered a firmware update, but never had the processing power to handle the java element on the disc.

Upscaled DVD has nothing on blu-ray. I've had an upscaler for at least 4 years and whilst there is a slight improvement, it doesn't hold a candle to a good blu-ray disc. Where a lot of people fall down with their home setups is they get their flash new TV home and they don't calibrate the screen, so all of the blacks are off, the colours are off and the image looks overly sharpened. If you google the make and model of your TV you'll no doubt come across the best screen settings to use.

I wouldn't blu-ray the vast majority of my DVD's, but the action movies, disaster movies, animations (Wall-e, Open season) I have rebought. The missus is well into them too, so that makes things easier! I've got the blu-ray version of Chronicles of Riddick as well, which has so much extra movie included it actually makes sense now. It seems they removed so much of the plot from the theatrical release they ended up ruining it.

I have a PS3 but if I didn't owe money to family and friends would love to get hold of that new Sony Blu-ray player with the multi changer in. I also have a Toshiba HD player, some great bargains for the loser format. But I love movies and my TV, skyHD, surround, and my curved reclining leather sofa (sorry I love my sofa) I would pay £50 for one to go in the bedroom when I get round to getting a small 32incher

That is the reason I don't see BR hitting the highs that DVD achieved. I don't think we're that far away from full-scale digital distribution of movies. So BR will have to get really cheap really fast, to lock in a large customer base and guarantee it's future, in my opinion.

No.

I don't have a HD telly, so it would be a pure waste.

I don't know all the figures, but if you look at the stats on PB, there are 2000 people downloading the HD version of Watchmen right this second. I wonder how many are buying it in the store?

I'm not advocating piracy, but I think it's fair to say that digital distribution is already quite mature.

Yeah, it just so happens that the pirates got there first.

They're giving people what they want, and have been for years. If the production studios had got their arses in gear, then I'm sure things would be pretty different.

I know! Excellent!

As for digital distribution - I don't even use the digital copy on some blu-ray discs - infected with DRM, whereas the disc can be bought, watched and sold on regardless of the DRM it uses. I don't mind buying a £15 blu-ray because I know I can sell it for £10 if I don't like it.

How many people outside of major cities are still on limited broadband, slow broadband, or weren't one of the 10 people who bought Apple TV? Yes there is Sky and Virgin movie channels, but the broadcaster decides what your choices are, there are no bonus features and Sky Movies is shockingly bad value (and will be cancelling it as soon as they bother answering the phone).

Exactly.

It'll soon be live or die for the production houses. If they move into digital distribution, people can get the films they want without resorting to piracy. Ok, there are plenty who wont change, but giving people the choice will certainly improve their chances, not to mention their image.

Their craze for litigation isn't endearing them to anyone.

Of course, this already happened with mp3s and I'm still not happy with that. The prices are actually higher than the physical media and the quality is lower. I suspect the same will be true of video...

On-line video rental should be a real winner though. I never watch films twice, so a 30 day rental for 99p would certainly get my business. Ironically, I have a nagging feeling it's already available but I can't remember the details. :?:

Yup, same here.
When the TV dies... or meets an unfortunate accident  then maybe otherwise, there are so much more important stuff to buy.. like new gadgets :D

Would a £50 Blu-Ray player give me 7.1 surround sound? I very much doubt it, which is why I voted no.

I don't own any Blu-Ray discs yet, but watching DVDs through the PS3 is nice. Except for the lack of surround sound.

I'll get a Blu-Ray player. One day. When I get around to it.
