If you can get your head in there, it's too big ;)
Or in the words of the poets Steel Panther:
" it's a bit like shooting hoops with a tennis ball, it's easy to get in but doesn't satisfy at all"

Good that we aren't on the old forums, otherwise I think the banhammer would be doing overtime.

At the moment, women have 15 years to go to university, get their career on track, try and buy a home, and have a baby. That is a hell of a lot to ask someone.

I think she had a fair point and she was referring to what she would tell her own daughter but as always these things are taken out of context. A lot of women are putting careers first and at what cost? I was married and ready to have a family at 27/28 but it didn't work out. A lot of women are in positions 'at the top' here in Discovery and none of them have families. Yes a lot will be through choice but some will be because they left it too late.

Some of you have said you disagree with it or it makes you angry. Sorry about that. Kirstie isn't scared to speak her mind and that's a good thing. It is only her opinion after all.

EDIT

And yet none of you have debated any of it really *sigh*

Because telling a woman that she should have kids with the first guy she meets because she is ripe for it and have to depend on him for food and shelter is ok? No wonder so many marriages end up in divorce.

Camille if you read the article you would see that she states there's a lot of cases where women just haven't met the right man. She is saying these things should be debated. She is not lecturing or telling people what to do.

Her point extends backwards through time, but might not serve as a good prediction. Telling today's teens that they have until the age of 35 to squat and drop a nipper is likely untrue. The best advice is normally not to invest too heavily in anally retentive life-plans, they have a habit of not accurately predicting one's life.

OK so you didn't read past the title ;) Fair enough but you should know newspapers sensationalise things to get publicity

I read the article and all I got from it is "Daughters from rich traditional families should remember that their duty is breeding and they can do a bit of working later for the fun" or " Find a significantly older man, ideally pretty wealthy that can set you up in a house and afford the kids"

As soon as you leave uni/ school your brain softens and it becomes nearly impossible to go back into education later.

LoL, all the female members of my family would disagree with you. Study is training, like anything else. It takes a bit of practise to get back in the habit, but there are far too many people studying OU courses during retirement to make that a truth.

I agree that the point should be debated, nowadays people are quick to condemn 'young' mothers who have kids straight out of school, but having children, or indeed *not* having children is a life choice, everybody should make it for themselves and I don't agree that Kirstie is saying that just because she found a rich older man, that it's right for everybody. Parents advise their kids, that's one of the biggest parenting roles, and having debates about things like pregnancy with your parents is a good way to make up your own mind about things, particularly if your parents are an example one way or another.

Some people don't have a choice, it's made for them by circumstances or nature, but *if* you are in a position to be able to choose a family over starting a career right away, then a) I envy that ability but also 2) I envy that right to choose for yourself. Kirstie's opinion may not be universally popular but it's her opinion and she has a right to express it. So many young people now are buckling under the pressure to find the right university, pay for it, work and find a job, I don't see any issue with someone standing up and saying that there is another way.

Studying as a hobby during retirement is not the same than doing it while working and trying to raise a family. Also I never understand what the point is, apart from keeping busy.
I think what bugs me more in this whole conversation, no one ever mention men, like they are only an accessory to an end. That decision should be taken by a couple, not from enticing by the mother.
