Time Out does a sci-fi film top 100

The problem is not Time Out’s list, the people who’ve contributed to it or even the films they’ve chosen. The problem is the genre itself.
Why is science fiction so hard to define?

Theoretically possible, actually possible these days... How much of the above constitutes 'A sci-fi movie' etc.

IMO all the interesting stuff occurs at the boundaries of genres.

It's maybe even more extreme in books. Would anyone here consider Haruki Murakami's "Hard Boiled Wonderland And The End Of The World" as science fiction? What about "Sewer, Gas And Electric" or "Mirage" (which has echoes of Philip K Dick's "The Man In The High Castle") by Matt Ruff. No one would dispute William Gibson's earlier books as SF but how about his most recent 'Bigend' trilogy? And in a similar vein, I found the books for Walter Jon Williams' most recent trilogy in 3 separate sections in Waterstones and only the one that I consider to be the least SF of the three in the Science Fiction and Fantasy section...
