One of the theories about why we have a silent universe is because it is very, very unwise to make your presence known. Wd’ve been screaming into the void for many, many years now. The big-ass mothership may well be on its way. Mind you, we have the Great Filter to consider. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Filterhttp://www.technologyreview.com/article ... -are-they/

The distances are just too great. Currently the fastest theoretical journey to Proxima Centauri is 85 years. Until this is less than half an hour, the Galactic Federation is science fiction. No I won't sell you my FTL drive for anything less than 60 billion slaves.
ps thanks for the links Paul.

I guess we'll just have to wait for the outsiders, riding in after a starseed...

One theory being that there is life out there, but not in the observable universe, which means that the distances are so vast we'll never make contact in any form. Seeding the universe will require distances that are at least travellable.

Another theory suggests that because the Universe is so incredibly old (in our frame of reference) we're just late to the party. Or early.

Another theory is that we are just a brain in a jar. *shrug*

That would have no bearing on how we live our lives

True. I did have a point to make with that, but I've totally forgotten what it was. Sorry. Mark

There is also the theory that any civilisation that has achieved the level of technological advancement to be able to traverse interstellar distances in a reasonable timeframe (say less than a century) will also have to be quite enlightened and peaceful, since if they weren't then at some point before they developed that level of technology they'd have blown themselves to smithereens.

We live with billions of other lifeforms, and we are starving them, beating them, grinding up their body parts because we think it will give us harder erections. We should start having a two-way conversation with the non-humans we have already met, the ones we live among, the only other life we will probably ever meet.

There's a very definite chance that that'll be us if things keep on the way that they are. Mark
