If you don't like Windows 10 can't you just re-install your preferred previous version from the system disks or from a clone of your hard drive?

As a Mac user that's what I'd be doing if I had installed an OS update that didn't work for me.

I've been having a lovely mac vs PC debate on bookface with someone today.

He moaned about macs so much I suggested he put his kit back in the original box and sell it on ebay.

Funnily enough he hasn't commented after that :D

Normally yes, but the free upgrade from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 reallocates the licence key to the Windows 10 installation, rendering the previous version useless without another key.

I believe you get a month's grace to decide and switch back but, after that, it's fixed*.

*Unless they've back-tracked on that too.

If Windows 10 is free why does it need a licence key?

Not having been a Windows user since Windows 2 when it all came on a handful of floppy disks I f find the whole thing somewhat perplexing...

They can't seem to decide if they want everybody on the same page or to make money.

Downloaded it manually, etc etc, then the CD-key I have for Windows 7 wouldn't work on it.

Windows 10 is not free. It costs money, but existing users can upgrade for free for the first year, and only if they already have a valid licence, therefore the need for a licence key.

If the PC has a dodgy copy of Windows, the owner need to pay for an upgrade, if you are buying a new PC, the manufacturer had to pay for a licence or if you are building it yourself, you need to buy a licence. Corporates need to buy licences for their PCs as well, they don't qualify for the free upgrade.

You have to apply for the upgrade and await notification.

Thanks to Joe for a possible solution. Download the ISO for a dirrerent computer using home rather than ultimate, then use the OEM cd-key for the 7 home that originally came with the laptop.
Worth a try. Just got to get a blank DVD.

Be careful which ISO you download. The 'combined' ones (that ave both 32 and 64 bit installs in them) don't actually fit on a DVD.

Why you should download Windows 10 right now | TechRadar
http://www.techradar.com/news/software/ ... ow-1300720

That just confirmed my worst fears about the updates - I need to know I can definitely shut them out, and I'd like that baked in ffs. Also I find Cortana increasingly creepy more than useful* :?

* Apparently it doesn't really work yet anyway

It depends on which version you have. Pro can select when to install updates and Enterprise will get the updates slower than the others. Home will get all the updates pushed to it as they come out (although I believe only critical are installed immediately).

Edit: Just been listening to Windows Weekly, it sounds like you can postpone non-critical updates for up to four months.

Got it sorted. I'm glad I upgraded, it seems very nice so far.

WTF?

The Solitaire bit is an especially dumb, greedy move.
