morning all,
i dont think its something you have eaten matey as this bug hit 4 out of the 6 in our house a week or so ago.the really strange thing is that it appears to be worse at night time, although the cramps did appear a few times during the day but it was far worse at night time and in all cases it lasted at least 4 days and 2 of our 4 got it again a few days later but for a shorter period.speaking to a local lady who's a doctor she said that it was highly contagace and doing its rounds at the moment.on a slightly better note i didnt get it :D
cheers spunky

The wife & kid got that the other week. I got away unscathed.

Imodium Plus, plenty of water and Saltzstangen (pretzel sticks? Dry and not much to them, lumps of salt on them, so helps maintain salt levels in the body).

You don't just lose Sodium Chloride like you would find on pretzels you lose a host of minerals, electrolytes and similar, including Potassium. You need to take those rehydration sachets which contain all of these things which you get from chemists.

This is what I would do :

Sip bottled carbonated water, that can reduce the feeling of general roughness.

Get the rehydration sachets from a chemist (also excellent hangover cure)

Get some kaolin and morphine liquid and use as stated. The morphine will work by acting on your opioid receptors in the walls of the your intestines. This will reduce the muscular contractions of the intestine (peristalsis) that move food and faecal matter through your gut.

The speed at which the gut contents are pushed through the intestines is therefore reduced, allowing more time for water and electrolytes to be reabsorbed from the gut contents back into the body. This results in firmer stools that are passed less frequently.

Kaolin is an absorbent substance. It is insoluble and is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Instead it acts locally in the intestines, where it absorbs toxins and helps make the stools less liquid. This will also relieve the diarrhoea.

When you want to eat, I would choose rice krispies or other rice products with skimmed milk, but avoid fats until it passes. Good luck.

If I get hit by Diarrhoea then I use Imodium Plus and drink flat (stir with a metal spoon) fat coke with a bit of salt in it.

Ok before anyone else says it, DON'T take table SALT.

You lose a host of things, salt or sodium chloride is just one, and taking it on its own will make matters WORSE.

Most rehydration mixed with contain salt plus Potassium chloride in the least, many add other stuff to it as what you lose is a mixture of things and has to be balanced.

is one I use.

And don't drink Lucozade to replace lost fluids. It actually tells you not to on the side of the bottle.

* Ooh, a sensible post from JV - what is the world coming to  *

As a young boy I remember always having a bottle of lucozade when I was poorly and off school. Except it was a glass bottle wrapped in that orange plastic stuff.

Sorry, I couldn't resist ;)

Seriously, it's something I've been lucky enough to have never had, so I hope you feel better soon :)

My Grandmothers Diarrhoea mix was warm water with a spoonful of salt and a spoonful of sugar mixed in....

Tasted flippin' awful but it worked, we've used it in our family for years, it stopped my sis getting dehydrated when she had the runs and was pregnant as well. Dunno about the science or otherwise and I usually buy Diarolyte sachets now, but it'll work in a pinch .... and if you can't be sure of getting to the shops and back without trouble :D

:?: Mixed into the water.

Dunno what sounds so wrong about it, it's disgusting but it works and it's a "good ole fashun recipe" which automagically means it's horrible but effective

Yep, that's exactly what I meant, caz, but I guess it's not so funny when you have to explain it. *sigh*

If Loperamide doesn't help much then go see a GP. You'll probably be prescribed codeine phosphate which works much better.

Do you have tablets in your house called Co-codamol?

Lol I know what cocodamol is. Could even self-prescribe if I wanted to.

Took some loperamide in the end and after the first two tablets, things eased.

Might've been but then why has no one else in the family been hit as hard? We've all eaten the same food. Of five, one wasn't affected, one wasn't particularly affected (mild flatulence), three of us had noxious (rottedn-egg-smelling) burps and flatulence for a few days. Everyone settled and I was the only one who then went down with diarrhoea.

The annoying thing was the day before the diarrhoea started, we bought lovely foods to gorge ourselves on - dairy eclairs, apple turnover, choc-chip cookies and a whole load of other stuff we wouldn't normally eat. We only bought it to treat ourselves.
