Nothing - Declare unto Caesar....

I set up a company for this very reason - if I get more than £100 it pays for itself.

If someone isn't giving me money I have them owe me a favour - always useful. ;)

To be self-employed you need to pay £2.10 p/w (I think) for National Insurance.

Don't resell anything to anybody and just have them pay for your services and the return is dead easy.

Up to £15k the tax return is easy, after that it's a pain in the backside.
The taxman still wants 20% of your earnings.

When I was contracting and working for myself if I got paid in cash I kept it. However the majority of my work was for the national newspapers or magazine houses and that was all invoiced and delt with by an umbrella company. I used to have my own company but as soon as I got it up and running I found permanent work. I didn't like all the paper work anyway.

Make sure you only get paid by cheque or BACS then. ;)

Seriously though, you can't moan that public services are rubbish and then pay less tax than you're supposed to. I know there are other factors but if more people played it straight then the frauds might be easier to spot.

It's a bit like when people cried foul about the expenses scandal and they themselves didn't declare their taxes or expenses properly.

Hello Mr. Kettle, I'm Mr. Pot. And you're black.
